I’m back on a plane headed to DC for the dedication of the monuments with a quick stop in Santa Fe. How has it been a week already since they were installed and we all said “see you later” as new friends with a bond over this incredible shared experience? This was an extraordinary journey with the most amazing people. I’m still pinching myself that the stars aligned to make it all happen. Here’s to the #smithsonianbison! 🦬

Still life with visiting my childhood friend @chasecustomboots, pilfering some of her scraps at her Livingston studio, collecting a backdrop at the recology store in town, and then heading to Bozeman and emptying my purse.

Chase (no relation) DeForest studied at RISDE and learned leathercraft as a boot maker. In addition to custom cowboy boots, the DC and Montana resident has in recent years been making stitched leather panels as art pieces. Her ‘Adrift’ exhibit at the @thesuperfair in San Francisco this weekend seemed especially apropos, both to the time and the bayside setting.

These Butterfly Boots were not only a joy for me to create because of their *kapow” color palette and fussy what I call gingerbready detailing, but also because I wouldn’t have to turn these over to a boot client - I’d get to keep them for myself!

I made my first pair of boots under the watchful eye of Carl Chappell, a third generation master boot maker from Texas. After his death, I was given the design and materials to assemble these boots, which now serve an homage to our time together.

Oh yeah, did you know I make custom cowboy boots?! @chasecustomboots
It was from making boots that I discovered the amazing capabilities of leather and began the art making end of my practice.

You can see these boots in person at the Livingston Center for Art and Culture’s Tumbleweed show until February 3
