This is the room.

Somebody’s blowing a kiss. Somebody’s got their hands folded in prayer. Somebody refused to smile on command. Every one of those choices is correct.

“CBC week” gathers Black people from every sector and asks us to be useful. What the program doesn’t capture is how much of the work happens exactly like this, standing close enough to hold each other up.

Nobody in this picture is shrinking, hiding, or separating important parts of what makes them whole. We show up as all of it at once, in the worlds we inhabit, in the clothes we chose on purpose.

Baldwin came with me this weekend. So did everybody here.

Shout out to our sister @michelelawjawando for creating this sacred space.

Goodbye ATL! Another NABJ in the books. 🖤

My first NABJ Convention was in Orlando in 2013. At 27 years old, I had quit my full-time job to take a leap of faith- going back to grad school for journalism. Some people warned me the industry was changing; it would be tough to break in. But I just knew this was where I should’ve been all along. I felt like a late bloomer eager to make up for lost time and NABJ welcomed me with open arms.

Ten years later, even as the entire media industry shifts again, I know it was the right choice. What’s for you is for you. Your time is your time.

I needed this NABJ to remind me of the journey and to see so many of the people who helped me navigate the unknown.

Seeing journalists like @jimenezenoa- exiled for speaking truth in Cuba- get his flowers last night, moved me so deeply to keep striving to report truth fearlessly because it’s our job. A revolution indeed.

My cup is full- until next year @nabjofficial! 🖤

Today my oldest started Kindergarten. 🥹🎒

As excited as I am for him, today is also a little bittersweet. It feels like just yesterday you could barely walk and needed me to hold you, and now you’re a growing boy starting school and beginning a whole new chapter.

I’m so proud of you, son. Watching you grow has been one of the greatest blessings of my life, and I’m so excited to see where this new journey takes you.

Go be great, Kingston. Dad loves you always. ❤️
