One year ago, I had the opportunity to display this banner at The Window Gallery on Church Street in Toronto.

As a tribute to all of the 2SLGBTQIA+ trailblazers who have carved the path for queer community members in Canada, I chose to restore and recreate the “Canada True North Strong & Gay” banner from the Canada’s first gay march in Ottawa on August 28, 1971.

This iconic photo was taken by Jearld Frederick Moldenhauer. In his account of the event, most of the protest signs were made in Toronto by Toronto Gay Action members, including Jearld himself. The event was done on a shoestring budget, so many of the signs were made with cheap materials: white cardboard sheets, ‘magic markers’, and stapled to sticks of pine. Due to the torrential downpour during the demonstration, most of the paper signs were destroyed by rain within minutes.

The banner leading the demonstration was constructed of letters sewn onto an old lace blanket. By all accounts, this banner no longer exists.

I used lace as a stencil on canvas to pay tribute to the original materials. I diligently revived the original typography based on archival records, and then hand-painted the text using enamel paint.

I hope this banner can live on for future generations of queer activists.

Thanks again to Sonja and Kelly at @akashaart for the invitation, and to One Properties for sponsoring the space for this show. Additional thanks to Daniel at @thearquives and @craigoryj for their research assistance, and to Jearld for his consent to use this photo. Thanks to @craigy_baines for hemming the banner, and to @adamaleger for his assistance with installation and photography.

Keep the protest in Pride.

Wow! Thanks everyone who came to my Artist Talk at @redheadgallery last night. It was a privilege to speak about art, design and Canadian brands with the best-of-the-best, @416honkey.

Special thanks to The Red Head Gallery for all of their help with setup and promotion of the event.

You still have lots of time to check out the exhibit:

Selling Canada
May 27—June 20, 2026
The Red Head Gallery
401 Richmond St. W.

Wednesday-Saturday, 12-5pm, or by appointment

Free admission

From my artist statement:
Using nostalgic imagery and the tenets of Pop Art, this new collection of work invites viewers to reflect on a shared visual heritage, often encountered passively in grocery aisles, television commercials, and kitchen cupboards − and to consider how this identity is manufactured and mediated through design. Branding, advertising, and product design are not neutral artifacts, but powerful conveyors of meaning. The collection sparks a dialogue about how consumer design functions as a type of public language, and how national narratives are packaged and sold.

Thanks to everyone who joined me for my Artist Talk at @GladstoneHouse last week! It was a privilege to speak about my process, my studio residency, and the new collection. Thanks again to @peony_iris for making this event possible.

I will be sharing all of the new paintings in the coming weeks. A few quick updates:

-I am currently seeking a venue in Toronto to host a solo exhibition, ideally this June or July. If you have any contacts with local galleries or pop-up venues who may be interested in hosting, please contact me for more details.
-once the work has been exhibited, the paintings will be available for purchase. Please contact me if you’d like more information, or a preview of the catalog.
-I will also be offering signed and editioned prints of each design during the exhibition, as well as an editioned art book featuring all ten new works. Please stay tuned for more details.

Thanks for your support!
