【マーサと観劇 “Before It’s Too Late” @ Outside In Theatre 10/6/2026】 English below Outside In Theatreのオーナーは、俳優のDaniel Blinkoff & Tamlyn Tomita夫妻。ウェスリーの双子の弟マークの招待で、エクアドル出身のマーサと一緒に出かけ、シーラと3人で“Before It’s Too Late”を観劇しました。 タムリンがお迎えしてくれてさっそく一緒に写真撮影！ Outside In Theatreは、一年前に開館した非営利劇場。ダニエルの母で著名な作曲家Carol Hallの遺志を受け継ぎ、築102年の建物を改装して誕生しました。多様な文化や背景を持つ人々の声を舞台に届け、地域社会と芸術をつなぐことを目指しています。 マーサの家で寒天ゼリーを作った日に、「アメリカに移住」している移民としての自分達のことを話しあいましたが、劇の内容がまさに「移民」の話でした。 . 主役のエクアドル系アメリカ人、クリストファーが、自分自身と家族の実話を舞台にした作品。観始めてまず驚いたのは、これは普通の「演劇」ではなかったこと！高齢の父親本人が舞台に登場し、昔、離婚して今はエクアドルにいる母親もビデオ通話で参加。クリストファーが観客に直接語りかけ、観客から通訳が出たり、シーラもお父さんとハグすることになり・・と、どこまでが演劇で、どこからがリアルなのか「境界」がない構成でした。 英語とスペイン語、移民一世の両親とアメリカで育った子どもの文化の違い、親子の距離、老いていく両親と「手遅れになる前に」向き合おうとする姿を、笑いも交えながら描いてあり、会場の多くの人が自分ごととして感じていたでしょう。 . 後半では、エクアドル料理“seco de pollo（鶏煮込み）”が実演！いい匂いが立ちこめました！終演後にはクリストファーの姉の店“Ave Maria”の料理が準備されていて、初エクアドル料理を食べました。家族の物語を観るだけでなく、最後はその家族の味まで体験！今までにない、とても印象に残る観劇となりました。 . 前日にも家族や友人を招待したマークが息子さんと劇場に現れ、ニシナカ家とその古い友達（タムリンやシーラ）も含めて、最終日の公演後に温かい時間を過ごしました。 ダニエルとタムリンの想いのこもった素晴らしい劇場で、興味深いプログラムが次々に準備されています。ぜひ足をお運びください。 . 劇場に向かう途中、ウェスリーと子供達が通った高校の前に、大勢の人たちが集まっていじめで校舎から投身自殺をして亡くなった生徒を追悼していたのです。本当に痛ましいことです。 気に入らなかったり、見下している相手をとことん攻撃する人はどこにでもいますが、こうして取り返しのつかないことが実際に起きてしまうこともあり、まさに“Before It’s Too Late”・・どうにかできなかったのかと残念でなりません。 #OutsideInTheatre Invited by Marc, Wesley’s twin brother, I enjoyed this unique play with Martha and Sheila. Founded by Tamlyn and Daniel Blinkoff, the nonprofit theater opened last year to celebrate diverse voices. The play tells Christopher’s true immigrant family story. His father appeared onstage, while his mother joined from Ecuador by video! Sheila even hugged his dad! Reality and theater blended in surprising ways. Afterward, we enjoyed Ecuadorian seco de pollo from his sister’s Ave Maria. Marc and his son joined us for a warm closing night. We passed the high school Wesley and his children had all attended, where people gathered to mourn a student who died by suicide following bullying. Heartbreaking. The title “Before It’s Too Late” suddenly carried another meaning. A moving evening connecting family, culture, and the importance of caring for one another before it’s too late.

BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE - one of the most original pieces of theater I’ve seen in ages. A new twist on a kinda one man confessional show, Christopher Moncayo-Torres, a delightfully confident performer, tells his life story with a twist. He utilizes his real, non-actor family in the show to work out their issues. His father flew in from NY to be there for his son. One of his sisters lives locally and appears as well as his sister in North Carolina and his mother in Ecuador, both via zoom. It’s incredibly funny and moving and as you start to do the math, you realize his mother and sister are staying up way past their bedtime to support Christopher in this endeavor. They want him to realize his dreams while he wants to use theater to bring his family closer together. Unfortunately the run has concluded, but damn does this guy have a future in show biz. Director Bernardo Cubria, a highly prolific actor, playwright, director and teacher, stages this piece so inventively. I love when I get the chance to witness people reinventing an art form.

“Before It’s Too Late” es una obra con la que muchos padres inmigrantes podemos identificarnos: criamos hijos nacidos en Estados Unidos y, sin darnos cuenta, el idioma, la cultura y las generaciones pueden convertirse en una distancia entre nosotros. Pero para mí fue todavía más especial porque es la obra del hermano de mi querida amiga @soycatherinegarces sus padres son ecuatorianos y verla ahí, conocer a su familia y descubrir un poco más de su historia hizo que cada escena cobrara otro significado.
