Join us on October 6 at Old Westbury Gardens as we welcome @friendsofowg, celebrated international photographer Dylan Thomas @dylan_location, and award-winning editor and writer Clive Aslet @cliveaslet for an engaging conversation about the creative process behind their newest publication, Old Westbury Gardens: Days of Grace (@triglyphbooks, 2026).

Moderated by noted interior designer Thammanoune Kannalikham @kannalikham_designs, the discussion will explore the stories, research, and visual imagination that shaped this richly illustrated tribute to one of Long Island’s most beloved estates.

Old Westbury Gardens: Days of Grace brings the house and its history vividly to life through archival images and lush contemporary photography. The book honors the legacy of the estate Jay Phipps built to woo his English love, Dita Grace, after promising to recreate the world of elegance, gardens, and dogs she had known in Sussex. She said “Yes”—and the rest is Old Westbury Gardens.

1. The front hall. Beyond the screen is the staircase. The ceiling, which appears to open the room
out to the sky, was painted by A. Duncan Carse, who later worked on the liner, the RMS Queen Mary.
2. In 1927, a new dining room was created. The paneling came from Henry and Annie’s house
at 1063 Fifth Avenue, which had itself been designed by George Crawley. Crawley now adapted the
proportions to the new space. Dark paneling and Georgian portraits were thought appropriate to a room
used mainly in the evenings.
3. The White Drawing Room was originally the library, for which Crawley proposed paneling in
white-painted wood to “harmonize with the carved wood mantelpiece,” which had been bought from the
English firm of White Allom & Co. The mantelpiece was later replaced by one in marble. The needlepoint
carpet came from the renowned collection of Colonel H. H. Mulliner, and was purchased by the Phipps family in 1924.
