Don't miss your chance to experience Cole Sternberg's (@colesternberg) "along the high embankments," closing November 8, 2026.

Located at Presqu’ile Winery (@presquilewine) in Santa Maria, this site-specific installation transforms an empty concrete bunker, unused by humans for years.

Cole's artworks are made in collaboration with nature, embracing the elements of soil, wind, sun, and water. The works in the space ask: What might the land teach us? How do we learn to listen?

"along the high embankments" is free to visit, Saturdays and Sundays, 12-5PM. Tap the link in our bio to learn more.

Low lighting, raw architecture, and an unforgettable evening in a concrete bunker. Transforming unexpected, non-traditional spaces into immersive dining experiences will always be one of my favorite creative challenges.

In the Pacific with @colesternberg for along the high embankments earlier this year. I didn’t feel great on the boat, not really a surprise but a small triumph I love the images so much.

Shifts of horizon, changes of light and texture, stillness with sudden air and speed away from land. Elements affecting work, and Cole’s dedication to this process, loved it all.

Tucked into a hillside just south of Santa Maria, The Bunker is a concrete exhibition space created by @presquilewine and @nomadicdivision where the art, architecture, and surrounding landscape feel closely connected.
For @colesternberg’s current exhibition, paintings appear against concrete surfaces as tapestries move in the wind, with open windows connecting the space to the Central Coast landscape.

As @epricco writes, “Art doesn’t have to be where you think it should be.”

Just three days from our August event with @colesternberg covering the theme "palm". To learn more about the topic, here's what the @CM_Khobar had to say:

“This theme is a tribute to resilience, generosity, and rooted creativity — symbolized by one of the most iconic trees in Arab culture. The palm thrives in tough conditions — just like creativity under pressure. The date palm is deeply woven into Saudi identity, found on the national emblem and in everyday life — from food to folklore.”

Join us for an artist talk with Cole Sternberg (@colesternberg) at ESMoA (@esmoaorg)

Cole Sternberg reflects on his recent journey to the Arctic Circle, where he continued his practice of placing his work in direct conversation and collaboration with the environment. Moving between this singular experience and the broader evolution of his practice, Sternberg will discuss how water, wind, weather, and time function not simply as subjects but as active participants in making his work.

The Arctic brings these ideas into sharp focus: a landscape of immense beauty and apparent permanence that is, at the same time, undergoing profound environmental transformation and occupying an increasingly tenuous geopolitical position. Through images, stories, and works made along the journey, the talk explores the shifting relationship between human intention and natural forces and how our attempts to observe, alter, preserve, and understand the environment reveal the complex nature of our place within it.

Saturday, September 12 | 3:30–4:30 PM
ESMoA · 14929 Hawthorne Blvd, Lawndale, CA 90260
Also streaming live on ESMoA's YouTube channel
Free · RSVP by emailing rsvp@artlab21.org
