EVERY COMMUNITY NEEDS AN ART CENTER.

For more than 50 years, Multnomah Arts Center has brought Portlanders together through arts education, from ceramics, music and dance to galleries and community art sales. It’s a place where friendships form, generations connect and creativity becomes part of everyday life.

During this summer’s Multnomah Days, Art Here (@arthereproject) captured some wonderful perspectives from community members about what MAC means to them and why arts education matters.

One sentiment particularly resonated with us: “Every community should have an art center.”

It’s a sentiment we’re celebrating alongside Community Music Center at our free Arts for All Community Open House on Friday, October 16, where we’ll welcome Portlanders to discover MAC for themselves.

Because the opportunity to make something, learn something and connect with others shouldn’t depend on where you live.

JOIN US FOR ARTS FOR ALL: COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE
- Friday, October 16 | 6–8 PM
- Doors open at 5:30 PM
- Multnomah Arts Center | 7688 SW Capitol Hwy
- Free and open to all.

Explore 16 arts experiences, meet our instructors, artists and community partners, and see the full widescreen version of this film, more community stories from Art Here, and demonstrations from our Arts Expo guilds in the auditorium.

Special thanks to Art Here for producing this wonderful look at MAC and the community that makes it possible.

Come curious. Make something. Meet your creative community.

We’re one week away from the FREE community screening of The Elk documentary. It’s 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the @portlandartmuseum.

This will be such a special event: After a screening of the 30-minute film, we’ll do a short Q&A, followed by a walking tour of monuments, culminating at The Elk itself. Our guide is @cafemama of @aroundportlandtours, who is one of the featured participants in the film. Other film participants will be there, as well.

This screening is part of the @adxportland fest at studios and spaces across Portland in October, and comes to you with support from @regionalarts, the @portlandeventsandfilmoffice and @pdxartsculture

The screening and tour are free but please be sure to sign up. (There’s a link in the bio, of course.)

Can’t wait to see you there! 🎥 🦌

PS: Add The Elk to your watchlists on @letterboxd!

Thats a wrap, for now. (😉)

Over a year of getting to know Alx, and an immense honor to be welcomed to document the process behind his Nez Perce naming ceremony.

Huge thanks to @crows_shadow for opening their doors to our production, @nwdoc @zp.productions and @desertislandstudiospdx for supplementing gear across production trips, @sarahperezmedia for saying yes to an idea before it had legs, and @jessiesears for helping our crew navigate sacred territory.

It takes a village, and this is just the beginning. Thank you to @regionalarts for believing in Alx’s story and supporting production costs.

Some exciting news about The Elk documentary! It’s an official selection of the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation and Technology. @thepfcat

You can catch the film at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at OMSI. 📽️

Tickets go on sale July 18 at the festival website: pdxfestofcinema.com

We’re thrilled to be paired again with our friends at @sideyard.studios, for Oh, Whale, a poignant doc about Oregon’s most famous (its only?) exploding whale. 🐳 🧨 And you don’t want to miss the two other amazing docs in the block: My Burning Pianist 🎹 from our pals @sparkingcreativity.art and Elders of Time, a film about time from the perspective of bristlecone pines. 🤯

What’s The Elk about? 🦌

Back in 2020 as protests consumed Portland, Oregon, the city removed a beloved elk sculpture for safekeeping. Nearly six years later, the elk was the first of the city’s damaged monuments to return, and the only sculpture without controversy. But in a city that never really stopped protesting, people remain divided over why the elk went away and what it means for it to finally return. All set in a nation divided over who (or what) belongs on a pedestal. 🗽

P.S. We’re working hard behind the scenes to bring Portland a free screening of The Elk later this summer. Please stay tuned for details!

Last week’s interview with Namita Gupta Wiggers @namitapdx was one of those conversations you never want to end. As former curator of the Museum of Contemporary Craft @craftmuseum, she brought incredible perspective, stories, and wisdom about Portland’s creative community to Makers Gotta Make. We barely scratched the surface, we could have talked all day! Thank you, Namita, for sharing your stories with us. ♥️

Our @seedandspark just launched to raise the remaining funds we need to get it across the finish line!! 🎥

If you haven’t already heard, we’re making a film!
Makers Gotta Make is a feature documentary telling the story of Portland’s maker movement - the artists, builders, designers, and dreamers who turned warehouses into workshops and ideas into thriving communities in the 2010s. It’s the story of how Portland became a creative phenomenon, and it asks a hard question: what happens when those communities start to price themselves out of the very places that need them now more than ever…downtowns and central city spaces?

We’ve already raised $70k privately to kickoff production and every dollar goes directly towards hiring locals for post-production, music licensing, and film festival distribution. Please visit & follow our Seed & Spark campaign (link in bio) and donate and/or share if you are able! ♥️

Featuring:
@katebingburt
@tsillipines
@merkledstudio
Greg Schrock
@somnack
@nancyhalespdx
@adxportland

And many more!
