a love letter to @screamsocietymontreal

three months ago, i hit a breaking point.

i had let so much build up and fester inside of me that i exploded on someone I loved. it was a reality check. we need to let ourselves feel — fully, honestly, and without shame. and we need somewhere for those feelings to go

one day i ran up mount royal and screamed at the top of my lungs. two women called me out for it, and immediately, i felt so damn guilty for taking up that kind of space. as i ran back down the mountain, i couldn’t stop thinking: how do i do this in a way that feels socially acceptable? how do i create a space where people don’t have to feel ashamed for being loud, angry, overwhelmed, frustrated, or simply human?

the answer was community. we’re all caught in some version of the rat race — a never-ending cycle of working, surviving, consuming, and trying to keep ourselves together. meanwhile, so many of the resources that are supposed to help us stay mentally and emotionally well are expensive or inaccessible. so people look for other ways to cope, and those ways aren’t always constructive aka las droguitas

that’s how scream society began.

we created a judgment-free space where people can show up, let something out, and be surrounded by others doing the same. no pretending. no making yourself smaller. no being embarrassed for having emotions.

and somehow, what started with one scream on top of a mountain became a familyyy

when i moved to montreal four years ago, i let a lot of small-minded bullies into my life — people who judged anything and anybody. scream society has completely changed that for me. it has helped me understand who deserves access to my energy and who doesn’t. it has filtered out relationships that no longer serve me and, in their place, brought me some of my best friends and best opportunities like being on the fucking tv and 3 radio stations bro

i thought i was creating a space where people could scream.

instead, we created a place where people could belong.

and for that, i’ll be forever grateful. love u gang shit see u there every damn thurday at 7:30pm. B THERE OR B 🟥
