1000+ of you SHOWED UP 🔥
We took over some iconic venues (hello @comedystoresyd + @riversideparra) this year and you filled the room 🥹

To our wonderful artists this year - @kruharale , @ramyaramapriya , @niv.prakasam @urvi_majumdar & @guneet_ofkaurse - thank you for bringing your magic, your mischief, and your brilliantly besharam attitude

Big love to the powerhouse crew who helped make Brown Women Comedy happen this year - Minnie (our marketing maven), Jasmine (artist support rani) and all the reviewers, media folks, tech wizards, photographers, videographer Sal , festival staff and venue legends who kept the wheels turning while we ran on adrenaline and chai.

Big love to the @australiansouthasiancentre team who held the fort while I went full-time comedy producer. Thanks for letting me drop the admin ball without dropping me.

And finally, to our generous funding partners – City of Melbourne and the Centre for Australia-India Relations @ausindiacentre - thank you for believing in a bunch of funny bold brown women. Your support didn’t just fund a tour - it fuelled a movement.

Next up after my nap: Brown Women Comedy goes REGIONAL. Yep, we’re taking our besharam selves beyond the big cities - Wagga Wagga, Griffith (MY PIND), Shepparton, Wodonga & Dubbo. Most likely your mum’s friend’s cousin’s town - let them know we’re coming to shake things up #brownwomencomedy #melbournecomedy #sydneycomedy

I’m a big advocate of starting small and letting the work guide you. You don’t need experience, or big budgets or extensive plans. You just need to get started, be persistent and keep at and you never know where it’ll take you.

Three years ago I had no idea @brownwomencomedy would become the largest comedy show dedicated to South Asian women comedians in Australia, I just thought it would be a fun thing to do and that there was a dire lack of representation at one of the world’s largest comedy festivals in my home city @melbcomedyfestival as well as other festivals like Adelaide Fringe. Three years on here we are, what an absolute pleasure to be part of FringePOD by @adlfringe to share my journey on becoming a “producer”. Big love to the @australiansouthasiancentre team of volunteers and to my cofounder who co-produced our first ever show 3 years ago at @qvwc_melbourne

Bas. Enough is enough. This voiceover is in Punjabi with English translation in captions. Men’s violence against women is pervasive, it exists in ALL communities. Though given my community online is predominantly Punjabi and there is nothing but silence from men, I’ve made this voice over in Punjabi. For those of you don’t know it’s the fastest growing language in Australia right now and we need more in language resources. We need spaces that are culturally informed, led by those with lived experience.

This is my third year producing @brownwomencomedy for Melbourne Int Comedy Festival which is one of the largest festivals in the world - if you asked me 3 years ago I would have had no idea that 1500 + people would show up to our show and we’d get mentioned in several media outlets from ABC, Arts Hub, Saari, Draw Your Box, Missing Perspectives and SBS. For so many people it’s their first ever comedy show they’ve attended! Personally I had only ever been to a couple of live comedy shows until I started producing BWC and this year we did it with no external funding or sponsorship. This year our show has broken so many records. I had no experience producing comedy shows, but here we are - somehow having produced the largest show dedicated to South Asian women in the country. Thank you to our audience who have showed up to support us - there would be no show without you and you make all the hours and hours of admin / organsing worth it! So here are some photos of amazing folks who came along to Brown Women Comedy 🤎
