This is it. The end of the year 2025, which I dedicated to a single goal - studying in Japan. And I achieved that.
Even though I spend the first half of the year doing little more than applying for the MEXT program and ruminating about the results while saving money on a shitty part-time job, the second part of that turned out to be full of things I could never have imagined myself doing.
I joined a radio club @rakugakivoice which became the best way for me to practice Japanese and to dive deeper into the culture. We’re actually broadcasting on a real FM station every Saturday so we’re legit.
I got a chance to apply my native language to get the first part-time job in Japan, recording video and audio materials for the Russian learning webpage. We have been working on it with @sophie_zborowska for the past 2 months and it’s easily the best working environment I’ve ever experienced. We got a nice team full of very sweet people and I really enjoyed the process.
I got to travel an unbelievable amount around the country - with my university group, with our small gang, and on my own. I loved all of it. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to experience so much of Japan for such a low cost thanks to the university; I had so much fun driving to Tottori with the guy who never drove a car in Japan before; and I was very surpriced how much I can enjoy solo trips after my bizarre Kanagawa adventures.
Last but not least, I met many-many people from all around the world, I’ve had many exciting interactions, I improved my Japanese a lot, and got into a huge Russian speaking comminity, as well as reunited with some people I met back in Estonia.
Even though I’m mostly having fun here, I sometimes realize how many things in my life I still need to figure out, which is stressing me out. Still, I keep reminding myself that the main purpose of this decision to go to Japan was having fun, so I will try my best not to overthink and to throw away all the unnecessary thoughts, because this might be one of the best periods of my life, and possibly the beginning of its craziest and most unpredictable chapter. So let’s enjoy.
Happy New Year! 🥳
