Black women, have we forgotten how to have fun?

I’m 47, an empty nester, and I’m realising how easily we put our own lives on hold while working, raising children and being the strong one.

Yesterday, I attended The Sitdown’s Black Joy event in London, and one thing really stayed with me. We get so caught up in being responsible adults that we forget how to play.

Last year, I went to over 50 networking events in London. I hugged strangers, asked questions and said, “Let’s be friends.”

Those connections led to amazing friendships and opportunities I wouldn’t have had if I’d stayed at home.

And it made me realise that being curious, meeting new people and putting yourself out there isn’t just about networking. It’s about enjoying life and making room for joy.

Black joy is more than surviving. It’s laughter, friendship, community and allowing ourselves to have fun at every age. Thanks @dionnereid @kidinyou for reminding us that we need to give ourselves permission to play and stop waiting to have fun.
Black women over 40, when was the last time you did something purely for fun?

Photography has always been a place of escape for me, but over the years it’s turned into something much more important. Sharing stories, whether yours or ours or mine has become my personal responsibility, because documenting history is vital to keeping our memories alive.

Photography is way more than trends, it’s the heartbeat of every event, every staple in history, every important moment in our lives, and I’m incredibly grateful to be given such a gift to take pictures in a way that tells a beautiful story.
