Artist Education: What Are You Willing to Sacrifice?

Building an art career requires choices.

Trina Burks reminds artists that sacrifice doesn’t always mean something dramatic. It can be as simple as giving up—or limiting—things that consistently take time, money, or attention away from your creative process.

Less screen time. Fewer nights out. Cutting unnecessary subscriptions. Reconsidering how you spend your time and resources.

The question is simple: What are you willing to sacrifice to make room for your art?

This is part of my ongoing series sharing lessons from Trina Burks’ Exposure Doesn’t Pay the Bills—because being an artist is not just about creating. It’s about making choices that support the life and career you want to build.

THE POWER OF LISTENING

In Exposure Doesn’t Pay the Bills, Trina Burks shares a simple reminder that can make a profound difference in an artist’s growth:

LISTEN.

Listen to your peers.
Listen to your mentors.
Listen to your surroundings.
Listen for opportunities.
Listen for danger.
Listen to what’s happening around you.

We ask for advice all the time. But how often do we actually stop, listen, and put it into practice?

Sometimes growth begins not with saying more—but with listening more.

A thought worth sitting with. 📖

IMPOSTER SYNDROME.

Something many artists experience—but rarely talk about.

In Exposure Doesn’t Pay the Bills, Trina Burks reminds us that imposter syndrome can make us question our skills, our accomplishments, and whether we truly belong.

As an artist, it’s easy to look at where you want to be and forget how far you’ve already come.

The reminder that hit me while reading this: stop beating yourself up for what you’ve attained. Respect the work. Own the accomplishments. You earned them.

Every artist has moments of doubt. The challenge is not letting that doubt define the work—or the artist.

Keep creating. Keep learning. Keep showing up.

You belong here. Get the Book @thepeachwpb

The Peach is Celebrating 5 Years of a dynamic artist collective that invites everyone to come and be their true creative self. September 5th, come and do just that. The Peach’s first lowrider meetup (car show) alongside 6 open studios boasting over 10 fine artists. Also, browse and buy art in our vendor village, leave your mark on the community mural wall and enjoy pop up poetry, live music, dance performances and comedy. If you’ve never been to The Peach this is a great excuse to do so. Come stop by my vendor booth and check out my art.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK — ONE CONVERSATION AT A TIME

One of the simplest suggestions from Trina Burks’ Exposure Doesn’t Pay the Bills is also one of the easiest to overlook: talk to strangers.

As artists, we often think networking means walking into a room and finding the “right” people. But sometimes it’s simply starting a conversation with someone you’ve never met.

Ask a question. Listen. Share what you’re working on. Be curious.

You never know who you’re talking to—or where that conversation might lead.

Your next collector, collaborator, friend, curator, or opportunity might start with nothing more than “Hi, what brings you here?”

Get out there. Start talking. Build your public one conversation at a time. @nmsafpbc @dizeimage

Every artist has to find the balance between confidence and cockiness.

In this reading from page 71 of Exposure Doesn’t Pay the Bills by Trina Burks, we talk about why that balance matters—not just in the studio, but in the relationships that shape an artist’s career.

Confidence allows you to share your work with fellow artists without feeling threatened by their success. It helps you approach curators with respect instead of entitlement, and it invites collectors into a genuine conversation rather than a sales pitch.

People are drawn to artists who believe in their work without believing they’re above everyone else.

Art is about connection. Confidence builds relationships. Cockiness builds walls.
