October’s song is here and this is a VERY special edition of the monthly series thanks to @eclaywhite. Clay performed some absolute magic on this track with flugelhorn and flute. He completely raised the ceiling on the song and spoiled me with dreamy takes of which I had the great pleasure of mixing together. I will definitely be releasing a longer version of this one sometime in the near future.
Stay spooky yall 🎃

June 2026 - spent mostly in awe of mountains, talented friends, wildflowers, birds, Duncan’s hair’s ability to defy gravity, etc. Celebrated dear friends in the most beautiful place!

TONIGHT, APLR is thrilled to welcome back renowned experimental percussionist, Jon Mueller, with special guest Adam Lion, PLUS Bryce Franich’s Trekchö Album Release! Join us for an evening at the outer edges of sound.

⚡️Monday 10/5 ⚡️Doors 6PM / Show 7PM

FRIEND LESS is a project by Jon Mueller. Its two recent EPs, Energy Rippers and Logic of Relics (with Bundy K. Brown and James Plotkin) aim to provoke the heart, mind and body through an unorthodox approach to rhythmic patterns. In performance, the pieces from Energy Rippers lean on a system of AIR (Acoustic Improvised Rhythm) using drums and voice to achieve a similar effect.

Adam Lion - Offering “a tone so pure it is almost a sine-wave” (The Wire), Adam Lion is a percussionist/vibraphonist investigating enabling constraint, acoustics, repetition, surprise, and coincidence. His experimental performances blur acoustic space, creating opportunities for new sonic frameworks to naturally emerge.

Bryce Franich makes loud drones in Asheville, NC. He isn’t particularly interested in rigid music theory or sterile studio perfection; his work is about the physical reality of sound, focusing on the grit of feedback, the physics of overtones, and the actual air moving in a room. You don’t need a degree to figure out how to make a speaker cone do compelling things.

Trekchö Ensemble is his latest project, an improvisational collective featuring a highly functional roster of musicians who actually know what they’re doing: Shane McCord (Sham, Avey Tare), Landon George (MJ Lenderman), Clay White, Tony Rolando (founder of Make Noise), and Tashi Dorji. Spanning a three-movement architecture, the record is rooted in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of Dzogchen, focusing on the intense mindfulness practice of trekchö, which cuts through spiritual materialism to find a pure, unforced presence. This is about musicians intentionally removing themselves from the overwhelming, relentless stimulation of modern technology to simply sit in a room together and create.

It was at one point during a post-Helene convo on the state of things when @joshcopuspottery mentioned to me the storm tourists looking for their disaster money shot. “I don’t mind that they come and take a picture – but just make sure to come back and see where we are down the road.”

I’ve carried that thought with me ever since. The before/after series I began building will always have that after/after component to it. Has to.

Slides: A few moments from a positive * after * this past Sunday and the christening of his latest celebration of community folk. As he’ll say, “…because we have enough monuments to presidents.”

📣 Golden Folk returns to the Grey Eagle next Wednesday, September 16th!

Last Golden Folk was incredible. If you were there, you know. From the first moments that Roger blew us away with his quick picking to the end when Fancy unleashed her honey-sweet voice and her tight band, everyone went above and beyond the assignment. Cannon made us laugh til our sides hurt with his clever songwriting, Tounds brought the feelgood catch campfire vibes, Nicholas drew us into his storytelling universe, and Prince Quail blew us away with their talent and their orchestral flair. If you were lucky enough to linger long enough, you would have caught some incredible impromptu song-sharing on the patio at the Eagle. Thankfully Hunter was quick enough to capture that on video! We'll be sharing some of that footage soon.

We'll do it again next week. We have fantastic crop of local and regional artists, from near and far, to introduce you to next Wednesday, and we fully expect that you'll leave the event with a new favorite artist.
