For four Saturdays this fall, Brooklynites had the chance to experience culture, music, art and workshops in the Jackie Robinson Park Playground in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The Fall Funs series was a four-weekend event hosted by @stoopsbedstuy with activities taking place every Saturday with the goal of bringing community members together through art, resources and community engagement.

STooPS founder @thekendrajross was a part of a coalition that wanted to enrich the area and help deter it from succumbing to the gun violence that overwhelmed the area. The Fall Fun series was her attempt to continue creating that change.

Blueprint hosts New York fashion week model boot camp mixer! On a college campus where fashion can sometimes feel like an afterthought, Blueprint Fashion Organization is creating its own space for it.
Founded at the University at Buffalo in April 2023, Blueprint, also known as UB Blueprint, began as a student project before growing into an independent creative collective. Today, it brings together models, designers, photographers, stylists, entrepreneurs and other creatives, creating opportunities for students to enter rooms that might otherwise feel out of reach.
For Samuel Agorioge, Blueprint’s co-founder and chief operating officer, that sense of accessibility is at the heart of the organization.

As progressive socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani surges ahead in New York City’s mayoral race, some Staten Island residents are making an increasingly familiar threat: if he wins, they’re leaving.

These warnings come as Staten Island, considered one of New York City’s most conservative boroughs, faces a demographic and political reckoning that has been building for years. According to maps from The NYC Election Atlas, in the last two presidential elections, 70% of Staten Islanders voted for President Trump. Due to Staten Island being a Republican stronghold in a city that’s largely blue, residents have been weary of democratic success. This mayoral election has created tension and has left many residents torn about escaping the city’s constant political landscape.

“If Mamdani wins, I’m packing up and moving out of Staten Island,” said Marc Garafano, a 58 year–old veteran at John Shea’s Republican campaign kick-off rally for the North Shore District council.

One of the longest-running and most historic rivalries in HBCU football is headed to an even bigger stage on Sept. 5.

Morehouse College will face off against Clark Atlanta University in the inaugural Labor Day Classic, honoring both schools’ legacies and birthing new traditions.

For decades, the matchup affectionately known as the Big Cat Classic served as the regular-season finale for both teams, capping a rivalry that dates back to 1900.

Jerry Freeman, one of the event’s organizers, believes that by moving the game toward the beginning of the season, the “opening season energy” will set the tone for the remainder of the year by keeping fans engaged.

“It will build anticipation, [fans] will get that energy for those first games, and by moving it to Labor Day weekend, which is a huge weekend in Atlanta with a lot of activity and a lot of people in town, it just becomes something special,” Freeman said.

Who are you rooting for?

“An ordinary Thursday saw the Brooklyn Bridge overcrowded with purple and yellow shirts worn by thousands of New Yorkers marching united in pursuit of one common goal: their children’s right to a proper education.

On Sept. 18, over 15,000 families—concerned parents, students, and educators representing over 200 charter schools—marched from Cadman Plaza Park to the bridge with signs that read “Excellence zip code deserves excellence,” and “choice is power,” as they chanted in support of charter schools and their right to exist.

“The change is right here with you,” said celebrity rapper Common, who made a guest appearance at the charter school rally. “Excellence is a civil right.”

Although charter school rallies have occurred in consecutive years, this year’s rally is particularly significant as the upcoming New York mayoral election could impact the overall presence of charter schools in New York for years to come.”
