Over the last 6+ months I’ve been able to witness the immense amount of grit and dedication that occurs behind the scenes for an ultra runner. For it to then translate into race day is all I could wish for my partner. Ethan, you embody many traits but your ability to smile and push through discomfort is one most admirable.

My incredibly resilient boyfriend returned to Mammoth to race 220 miles. Last year I was secretly tracking Ethan’s race online in awe. This year I had the privilege to pace him for 40 miles and send him off w/ a kiss at every aid station.

Shoutout to the whole crew and our badass media guys @m.guelzacarias @cameron.haylock

Supplying every runner at @themammoth200 with our B01 belt has been a dream come to fruition.

Despite only receiving the belt at check-in the day before the race, roughly forty runners chose to start The Mammoth wearing it. We also saw more than a few runners at the start line in well-used first-edition B01s.

Over our next few posts, we’ll tell the stories of a few of these runners.

More soon!

MAMMOTH 200 — DAY THREE - FINISH RECAP

6:30am, cold and shady on the side of the mountain. Ethan had been alone through the night after one of his pacers slept through his alarm. An unsuccessful attempt at sleeping on the dirt left him with only 2 mins of sleep heading into day three.

He seemed unfazed, listening to music and enjoying the stars before the sun came up over Grant Lake. Yellow, orange and red trees hugged the mountains as Ethan stripped off his cold-weather gear and got moving.

At June Mountain, he grabbed a quick feed, shared a few laughs with the crew, then headed out with his dad pacing him for the next 10 miles.

Mile 190. Comfortable, controlled, and with a few cuss words directed at his heavy legs. The sand was relentless, the sun beat down, and sleep deprivation was playing its part.

At the next aid station, Ethan’s sister picked up the pacing and, in her kind but sharp way, said, “Just send it.”

That kicked him out of his funk. The only thing Ethan was racing was his ghost from the year prior. His friends and family gave him more energy than any carb intake could.

Sydney joined him for the final miles into Mammoth. I waited on the side of the mountain, and before I saw their head torches, their conversations and laughter echoed across the horizon.

Ethan sent it down the final descent and crossed the line as the first two-time finisher of the Mammoth 200.

217 miles.
Time - 63hours 24minutes 31seconds
6th male.
9th overall.

Another ghost to chase, and another experience shared with the people he loves.
