When I tell people I study aesthetics it may come off to some as pretentious. They might think well don't we all in a time of tik tok and pinterest with all our different "cores" and decade throwbacks? Well we also live in a time where not only physical, but digital media is being erased as well. From book burnings to digital clouds no longer being supported (look into what's happening to PBS right now) it is making way for AI whether we're in favor of it or not, to become our primary answer resource - which we know isn't always accurate. Misinformation will increasingly spread with fewer outside sources to fact check and correct these inaccuracies. This is why documentation and preservation but more importantly having an academic approach to documenting is so important. If you want to revisit your nostalgia of the last 3 decades or design movements that preceeded and inspired trends of today in a more academic way start by introducing yourself to Evan Collins (who studied and trained in architecture with an art history background) who founded CARI (Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute) and the team's efforts of archiving, teaching, grouping, naming and putting a timeline to this stuff. I crossed paths with Evan in the early 2010's in online spaces filled with people with the same intrigue for all this, emerging from the Vaporwave music and visual arts scene which celebrated design concepts of the 90s, think early web, early videogame consoles, PC games, older mall motifs @freddyolo helped popularize/ gave it more traction at the time as well. About a decade later I'm having the pleasure of joining these wonderful like-minds for in person meets of live music, presentations, spoken word, and discussions. It was a success I think and I'm excited for more.
