Here's how to train your eye to see values accurately. Pick any area in your reference image and guess its value before using the color picker. Then use the color picker to check your answer. Repeat this process over and over until you can consistently identify values correctly. The better you become at seeing values, the better your realism will become. This one skill will improve every black and grey tattoo you do. When I first started tattooing, I struggled with realism for the same reason many artists do: I couldn't accurately identify values. I had done value scales in art class, but nobody had ever shown me how to actually apply them to real artwork. Everything changed when I started training myself to see values using a 10-value scale. I would point to different areas of a reference image and try to accurately identify the value before checking my answer. Over time, this trained my eye to see value relationships much more clearly. Once I could accurately identify values, rendering them became dramatically easier. It takes more than extraordinary tattoos to receive a GTG Star… By the time an artist reaches the Nominee List, they've already demonstrated an exceptional level of artistic ability. But receiving a Star requires something more. We look beyond the tattoos to see whether they truly exemplify the other GTG Values: Integrity and Kindness, Synergistic Collaboration, and a Professional Ethos that elevates the industry. These are the artistic rockstars of tattooing, the artists we look up to not only because of the work they create, but because of the standard they set for everyone around them. Very few artists will reach this level, but that’s what makes them some of the best in the world! GTG isn't simply a list of incredible tattoo artists. We're working to create a clear standard for extraordinary art and service that helps elevate tattooing around the world! This is what we are looking for to be on the Nominee List for the Global Tattoo Guide. We look for solid artistic and tattoo fundamentals that reach a world class level. Are the values rendered with precision? Does the artist understand when to use hard and soft edges and how to transition between them? Is their use of color intentional and harmonious? Does the composition have the structure and integrity to work beautifully on the body and hold up for a lifetime? When those fundamentals consistently reach an exceptional level, an artist may earn their place on the GTG Nominee List. And if you're an artist working toward that level, we've created free help videos covering these skills so you can identify where your work can improve and continue developing your craft! Know an artist whose work deserves that deeper look? Submit them to GTG as an applicant! This is how artists make it onto the GTG Watchlist. Artist reviews start with fundamentals not followers. If the work is solid, it has clean lines, smooth shading, solid color, and accurate rendering. the artist earns a place on the GTG Watchlist!
