A large-scale blow up of one of my 'American Panoramas Beyond 360°' photography, part of the eponymous book--including prose, poetry, and photography--that is available for purchase on my website indycorrespondent.org. I will also be displaying select large-scale photos at @storagespaceindy in March, where they will be available for purchase.
Most often the photography inspired the writing, but in this case, it was the other way around:

Pyramids

Not the Giza pyramids built by the pharaohs
but the “Pyramids” office park
on the northside of Indianapolis
where I had an appointment
with Dunhill Staffing Services on August 1, 2006.

The office was located on the third floor
of Pyramid One.
Instead of a gloomy tomb I found
an airy perch with a view
of its two angular triplet sisters;
identical structures of glass and concrete.

I entered the computer room sarcophagus
and sat down for two hours of office
skills assessment: tests including
typing, alpha-numerics, Excel, and Word.

The high priestess of Dunhill took my papers
and promised to make an attempt
at career prospect reincarnation
despite my CV burdened with too many years
of retail slavery and a skills assessment
that left much to be desired.

The PLOT Project recently received the @asla_illinois Presidential Award in the Communication category for reframing landscape as a public-facing communication platform. Through landscape intervention, interpretive signage, and digital media, the project challenged assumptions about aging, ecology, and the role of exhibitions in civic space.

Developed for @exhibitcolumbus 2022–23, PLOT made ecological processes visible while positioning the Mill Race Center community as active civic participants.

Awarded the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize by the @landmark.columbus, the project leveraged collaborative partnerships and in-kind contributions to extend its impact and resources.

@forms_surfaces collaborated on the engineering and fabrication of the project's three pavilions.

@forceconstructionco.inc supported the pavilion installation.

@columbusinparks assisted with site preparation and treatment, including layout and de-sodding of the planting plots.

These collaborations allowed the project to achieve a significant civic and ecological presence while operating within the constraints of an exhibition budget.

Foundational to why we started Merritt Chase—and to the work we continue to do in cities like Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus—is a vision for a new chapter of public space and urbanism across the region.

We believe this next era can build healthier and better connected cities and advance an approach to design that is distinct to these places—rooted in local ecology, climate, culture, and history. We had the absolute privilege of experiencing the Miller House in a way not many people get to 🤍

Private walkthrough alongside Johnathan Tate, an award-winning architect and founder of Office JT whose work has been nationally recognized for its innovation and design. Getting his perspective while walking through one of the most iconic modern homes in the country made the experience that much more powerful.

And to top it off, our guide was Ben Weaver, who was Irwin Miller’s personal assistant. Hearing stories firsthand added a whole different layer to the home… the history, the intention, the lifestyle behind every single detail.

From the conversation pit to the floor-to-ceiling glass, every space felt purposeful, timeless, and honestly ahead of its time.

Moments like this remind us why Columbus is so special. The design, the history, the people behind it all… it’s unmatched.

Grateful doesn’t even begin to describe it.

"Joy Riding is a multimedia experience that highlights the joyous nature of Black car culture in conversation with the iconic aesthetics of the mid-century modern architecture of Columbus, Indiana. The project transforms Columbus’ Jackson Street Parking Garage into a destination for music and entertainment.

The installation manifests as a bespoke, Transformer-like sound system collapsing the proportions and materials of mid-century modern furniture with the aesthetics of [Black] car culture. Frozen in its fully transformed state, it evokes the deep basslines central to Black car culture, underscoring how sound, ritual, and assembly have long served as catalysts for celebration.

Over its duration, Joy Riding aims to remind visitors of the fun they had riding in the car with friends, listening to their favorite album, and finding happiness in the simple pleasures of sitting in the parking lot."

Both the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Exhibit Columbus — two of the most important North American venues for architecture, urbanism, and design — are in their tenth year. Its leaders are dialing in what’s next for these programs: how they foreground innovative design, establish new standards of practice, enhance community spaces, and expand audiences.
