An initiative by @spot.the.dot (main account!) to raise awareness of #melanoma and other types of #skincancer

Hi, I’m Marije, the person behind Spot the Dot. I’m Dutch and living in Austria. I work on skin cancer awareness campaigns all around the world, in 10 languages. I like to do things out of the box and make my work fun while connecting it to my own personal interests. That is why you might sometimes see a (black) metal meme, a skate deck, or a street art mural dedicated to skin cancer awareness. Why not combine something heavy with something fun?

Do I really hate the sun? Well, yes and no. But that is not the point. I was never into sunbathing or tanning. I was always a nerdy kid who spent most days indoors, listening to loud music and reading comics. Still, I developed melanoma and did not get it checked in time. I did not even realize skin cancer could be deadly until doctors found a melanoma on my leg and discussed life expectancy with me. That moment sparked my mission with Spot the Dot.

I run the non-profit on my own in my free time, with the help of many lovely people and organizations. DM me if you want to help or grab a coffee. Sometimes it can be as simple as creating photos with merchandising or helping with translations.

Come say hi at concerts! See you this month at @theofficialnapalmdeath in Vienna or at @terzijdehorde in Groningen!

Early detection can save lives, so check your dots!

Between hospital shifts and Baltic winds, she’s raising skin-cancer awareness and still choosing the paddle-out.

Are you a surfer? 🏄‍♀️
A surfing medical professional? 🩺
A surfing cancer survivor? 💪
A surf photographer/filmmaker? 📸
Do you organize surf-themed events? 🎉

If you are a surf enthusiast ánd you want to support skin cancer awareness, drop the emoji that fits you best. I’d love to connect.

For years, I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind. A skin cancer awareness initiative focused on the surf community. Not just because I care about the cause, but because so many of my friends are out there riding waves, spending hours in the sun.The timing never felt right. There was always something else.
But that is going to change...

Get ready for surf content with a purpose. Coming soon. 🌞🌊

🎃🍃 Remember, even in autumn it's important to protect your skin from UV damage and check for any unusual-looking moles.

🛹🔥 @ee.sss.a took our Seek Shade & Destroy skateboard out for a ride along the Wien Fluss

This skatedeck is created by @dedonleon for @spot.the.dot depicting a bottle of sunscreen skateboarding and flipping the top of another sunscreen bottle while performing a nose grab. The illustration, along with the title, is intended to serve as a fun conversation starter about the importance of prevention and detection of skin cancer among skateboarders. For instance, by staying in the shade, wearing a cap, and applying sunscreen.

🎃🍃 Remember, even in autumn it's important to protect your skin from UV damage and check for any unusual-looking moles. Damage to moles can be gradual and doesn’t always happen instantly after sun exposure, so it’s during the autumn and winter that changes to moles may go unnoticed because we’re all wrapped up in layers. Let this be another reminder to get naked and spot your dots! Try to do it once a month 🍑🛁🔎

* New: Spotted Realities book *
Photography meets skin cancer awareness
Anna Bedyńska for Spot the Dot

‚Spotted Realities’ is a compact photobook (13x20cm) that challenges you to find the dots in the photographs as well as it challenges you to think about skin cancer prevention. Within its 200 pages, made of premium Munken Lynx paper and a transparent cover sleeve made out of Munken Kraft paper, you’ll find 70+ photographs as well as information in English, German, Dutch, Japanese and Polish. Price: 19 EUR. Edition of 300.

In the heart of Japan’s urban expanse, photographer @Anna Bedynska captured the poetry of the mundane, highlighting the unnoticed beauty of everyday dots and revealing the essence of contemporary Tokyo. A collaboration with the non-profit Spot the Dot, Spotted Realities is more than an artbook; it’s a call to action. As you explore these pages, consider the dots on your skin, for within this tapestry lies a vital conversation about skin cancer awareness.
