Part 1: What do UOJ members do for a living? 👀

A bunch of different people walk through our doors every day—different jobs, different backgrounds, and different reasons for training.

But Jiu-Jitsu brings us together.

Here’s a look at what some of our members do when they’re not on the mats. 🥋

✨August Dump✨

So much change this month.

This year started with a lot of loss. I was forced to recognize this year as a year or big transitions. Only now instead of changing from a place of fear, sadness, loss, or grief…the changes this month have been from a place of love, empowerment, and direction.

This month I made my black belt debut. I taught 3 seminars. I transitioned gyms I teach at (which was hard, but also necessary and good). I’ve made new friends, and cherished old ones. I’ve pushed myself in both new and familiar ways. I traveled…a lot! Trained hard. Trained soft after hitting my head again (I’m okay!). Celebrated 37 trips around the sun and one year at black belt. Jumped into Lake Michigan after a dope outdoor open mat. Chopped off my hair… and as cliche as it sounds… felt like I lost the weight of more than just hair.

Life is good. And it will always come in waves.

As Mary Oliver says, “in order to live in this world you must be able to do 3 things. To love what is mortal. To hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and when the time comes to let it go, to let it go”. That quote always gives me peace and I feel like the last 6 months has been a process letting go and trusting my footing again.

This month was a reminder that consistency doesn’t always look the same. But if you find a way to put one trembling foot in front of the other, no matter how slowly or small your steps, you will find your way your way out of the toughest spots, and YOU WILL feel like you again. Afterall the tough bits are part of you too. ✨

If I could take one thing away from this month it’s this:

Never quit on a bad day. 🫀

Succesful 2 day trip to SD

Saturday @f2wbjj was a great experience, was my first time competing this type of events, one match, walkout, lights and cameras all on you. Thanks to @f2wbjj for the opportunity.

On friday I taught 2 classes at @sinistrogentlearts gym in encinitas @gentlearts.jiujitsu Grateful for this opportunity as well.

I wanna say living the dream but to be honest I was never a big dreamer I was more of a nightmare type of person haha. One day I just decided that I wanted to take this sport seriously and try to make a living out of it; we are working everyday towards that, just going with the flow enjoying every experience.
Grateful for everyone thats been part of this journey and look forward to keep growing as an athlete and as a human.

Ps. The reason I use the pink/purple tape in my competitions is for @chitoveraufc and @mariapaulinae daughter Ana she has moeubius syndrome so this is my way of helping raise awareness for this rare condition.
