This is the jacket I’ve chosen to use for my #walthamstowwildways art project.

The choice is a mixture of a deliberate search and the luck of the second hand online market!

I deliberately searched for something listed as ‘satisfactory’ mostly because I don’t want to make a shiny new waterproof no longer fit for purpose (every stitch makes a hole, so every stitch line would need taping!!) but also because I wanted something that had actually been out in the great outdoors!
I wanted a light colour that would act as a nice canvas for a variety of colours.
I didn’t want to spend huge amounts of money.

And this #berghaus Gemini is what I found.

I cut my teeth as a technical apparel designer at Berghaus in Sunderland.
I made many lifelong friends whilst there and learned a huge amount from the more senior members of the team.
So the fact that this is a Berghaus feels significant.
It’s also a Gemini - which was often deemed by some as a ‘dog walkers’ jacket. I remember in my early days this being possibly the least exciting of customers to design for… the generalist / allrounder….not as sexy as mountaineering or big wall climbing.
But now some 20+ years later I have a lot of affection and appreciation for this kind of product.

Some of my old colleagues and friends have helped me work out that this jacket is probably about 30 years old, so it pre-dates my berghaus design days.
I don’t know what kind of life it led - whether it walked many dogs, stomped up and down hills or spent most of it life hung in a wardrobe but it is in pretty good shape I reckon.
It no longer has its fleece zip in counterpart, but Zips, snaps, Velcro all in good working order. I’ve not tested it’s waterpoofing or DWR but visually aside some slightly grubby cuffs the coat looks great!
I wonder if more recent incarnations of this or other jackets produced in more recent years will also be going (fairly) strong after 30 years?!

Highly recommend getting out of bed at 5am to go to the forest and listen to some birds welcoming the day!

An even minier mini iron - hopefully means easier waterproof gear repairs!

Started making a stitch book to take on #StitchHikes as a way to show what you can doodle with a needle and thread

Just finished this wonderful book! In many ways it was filled with things I already know - or at least suspected. Connection with nature is pretty essential to our existence as humans - after all we ARE nature!! This is one of the reasons I’m hoping to facilitate many more #StitchHikes this year, to help people living in my community get into the outdoors literally on their doorstep - whilst also practising some stitching! It’s a wonderful pairing of activities I reckon!!

⭐️ A few before and after pics from yesterdays Re-use and Repair Fair

🙌 I did 14 repairs in total over the 4 hours - I was pretty non stop

☔️ I spoke to at least 3 people about the importance washing of and reproofing their waterproof clothes.

✂️ I also talked about repurposing and how I use unwanted/damaged clothes and textiles to make new pieces!

🩹 There were many compliments on the scrap patches I’d made and I even sold one (despite not being prepared to take money!!)

🙏🏻 Thankyou to @artillery_arts for inviting me to be part of this fair’s team. And Thankyou to everyone who brought their things for repair! You have extended the life of your clothes that bit longer!

📆 Im planning my first social #e17 #StitchHike for the 28th November to celebrate #citizenfriday. Which is all about “Share, Repair, Get Some Fresh Air!”

🥾 This will be an easy walk in a local patch of Epping forest.

🪡 There will be Some stitching (BYO or I can provide some basic materials).

🤞🏻 The plan is for the stitching to happen in the forest - because sewing in nature is lovely! But I appreciate that it’s November and there may well be inclement weather!! So there may be a cafe involved!

🗒️ I’ll firm up the details nearer the time to ensure it doesn’t resemble a tough mudder event and that we aren’t stitching in a downpour!

👋 If this appeals and you’re available on this particular Friday afternoon drop me a DM so I can ensure you are kept up to date!

❗️ Disclaimer: This will be a social stroll and stitch, where everyone is ultimately responsible for their own well being.

⛈️ If the weather is terrible I’ll of course postpone - I’m pretty hardy and outsidey in all weathers but I’m not daft! 😊

🪡 I’ll be at the @artillery_arts Reuse and Repair Fair in a couple of weeks offering repairs for your outdoor clothing.

📌 Please check my pinned @utilifolk post where I talk about what I’ll be able to mend on the day

👀 Have a look at the videos I have posted showing some different types of mend!

🩹 I can patch and fix holes in trousers and shirts and most fleece or softshell items. I can fix small holes in waterproof garments.

👀 Most mends will be visible - I encourage you to embrace the marks your outdoor adventures have left on your gear!

❌ I won’t be able to replace zips or hardwear as these are very garment specific. I also won’t be offering darning or mends on merino base layers or garments with very high levels of stretch.

🗣️ I can as always offer advice on cleaning and maintaining your outdoor clothing.

🙋‍♀️ If you’re not sure if your item is something I can fix drop me a DM and I’ll do my best to help!
