Should medical patients and recreational consumers be treated differently?

Fez from Elevate Wellness raises an important question about Canada's current regulatory framework.

Medical patients, including veterans, can have very different needs from recreational consumers. Yet many of the same product restrictions apply to both markets.

Should there be a separate approach to product formats, potency limits and patient needs?

It's a conversation worth having.

Every emerging industry has the year where the headlines read like a funeral.

Cannabis is having its year, and it's loud.

Most people are watching the wrong number.

The messy part was fun. Triple digit growth, no discipline required, everyone a genius. That phase always ends, and what it ends with is the tourists going home.

Growth was never the metric. Margin was.

Operators who protected profitability instead of buying share are the ones who still have a balance sheet to work with, and they're about to buy the assets of everyone who didn't.

⚠️ Everyone is watching the casualties. Very few are watching the evolution.

📉 Consolidation → Fewer licensed producers.

🎯 Specialization → More talent moving into medical, pharma and focused operators.

🏪 Retail roll-ups → Bigger chains controlling more of the major markets.

Canadian Cannabis isn’t dying.

It’s growing up.

And mature industries reward very different businesses than emerging ones do.

The real question:

Are you building for where cannabis is going…

or for the industry that already existed?

💊 If cannabis can be prescribed as medicine… why are we taxing it like a vice?

Health Canada approves it.

Doctors prescribe it.

Insurance can cover it.

Veterans Affairs can reimburse it.

Yet patients still pay a sin tax.

Which is it?

Most conversations around AI in regulated industries are still happening at the surface level.

Meanwhile, companies are quietly using it behind the scenes to reduce operational friction, structure decision-making, automate repetitive workflows, and create leverage where teams are already stretched thin.

Catch Elevate Wellness founder Fez Rismani on June 1st at the CannaVision ’26 Executive Summit in Toronto leading the discussion around the practical side of that shift alongside an incredible group of operators and industry leaders.

Not “AI will change everything.”
More like: what actually works, where it breaks, and how businesses are applying it in the real world today.

Looking forward to the conversations ahead.

Tomorrow’s THRIVE Conference is officially sold out.

Catch our founder leading the discussion around how AI is actually being implemented inside modern businesses today, from workflow automation and operational bottlenecks to decision-making and execution.

The conversation around AI is rapidly shifting from theory to practical implementation, and that’s where some of the most interesting discussions are starting to happen.

Big thanks to @bcfoodandbev, the THRIVE Conference team, and @fortisbc for putting this together.

Follow the value - not the crowd.

Fez Rismani @fezup of Elevate Wellness @elevatewellnessinc saw early where the market was going…and chose to build at the far end of the value chain.

Not just products.

Formulated experiences.

From gummies to wellness-focused formats - this is where differentiation actually happens.

@mendomedical is proud to highlight the brands thinking ahead.

Canadian LPs have the edge. The window is open. But it will close fast.

Right now, Canada leads global cannabis exports. Australia, Germany, and the UK are wide open. The U.S. is stuck, waiting for federal reform.

But here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud:

→ Local cultivators in every market will scale up. Fast.
→ Governments will protect their own growers, extractors, and manufacturers.
→ Import bans are coming. It’s not a matter of if, but when.

Canada does not allow cannabis imports today. The reason is simple: protect domestic jobs, investment, and infrastructure. Every other country will follow the same playbook.

This is the cycle:

1/ New markets open. Imports fill the gap.
2/ Local industry grows. Governments step in to protect it.
3/ Imports get restricted through tariffs or banned. The door slams shut.

If you are a Canadian LP, this is your moment. The brands that move now will own the lane. They will build relationships, set up supply chains, and become trusted partners before the walls go up.

Wait too long, and you will miss the boat. The opportunity will be gone. The market will belong to those who acted early.

Here’s what you need to do:

→ Move now. Secure contracts in open markets.
→ Build deep partnerships with local distributors and clinics.
→ Invest in compliance and local knowledge.
→ Prepare for regulatory shifts. Stay ahead of the curve.
→ Double down on quality and reliability. Become the standard.

The global cannabis market is changing fast. The winners will be those who see the writing on the wall and act before the door closes.

This is not a drill. This is the playbook.

Move now, or get left behind.

🤡 Taxed on imaginary future sales.
🧮 Taxed on actual sales.
💸 Taxed on outdated fantasy prices.

Imagine any other industry accepting that.

Only in cannabis...

Still infusing with distillate? You’re not wrong… you’re just behind.

🚨 Cannabis isn’t just THC.

The plant carries 500+ compounds, including 100+ cannabinoids, plus terpenes, flavonoids, and other phytonutrients that all play a role in the entourage effect.

Solventless, full-spectrum inputs like live rosin bring:
✔️ Cleaner, more balanced experience
✔️ Better onset curves
✔️ Measurable difference in EEG scans

Distillate had its time. Now? It's about flavour, effect, and function.

Your customers are ready for the upgrade. Are you?
