Thinking about applying for a BHP Traineeship this year? Read this first!

Every year, thousands of Australians rush to submit their applications when BHP Traineeships open towards the end of the year.

The problem? Most people wait until applications open before they think about their resume and cover letter. By then, it’s a race against the clock, appointments fill fast, and opportunities to perfect your application become limited.

🏆The best candidates don’t prepare when applications open, they prepare months before.

Your resume is your first impression, and in a highly competitive recruitment process, it needs to clearly showcase your skills, transferable experience, and potential. Companies like BHP, particularly your entry level traineeships utilise ATS to screen applicants in a flash! Traineeship roles receive tens, of thousands of applicants!

At Industry Resumes, we specialise in creating ATS-optimised resumes and tailored cover letters that help you stand out from the crowd.

Don’t be one of the thousands scrambling at the last minute.

✅ Beat the rush.
✅ Give yourself the best chance of success.
✅ Apply with confidence.

📩 Book your resume before the end-of-year rush starts and be ready when applications open.

Because opportunities favour those who prepare.

Once your resume is built, the next step is learning how to interview.

A strong resume gets you shortlisted.
Strong interview technique is what converts that shortlist into an offer.

Your resume is the what.
The interview is the how and why.

That means learning how to:
• Speak to your experience with structure and clarity
• Turn resume bullets into confident, credible stories
• Explain outcomes, not just tasks
• Use the same language intentionally, without underselling yourself

Many candidates think the work stops once the resume is done. In reality, that’s when the real preparation begins.

Because if it’s on your resume, you should be able to explain it clearly, confidently, and consistently in an interview. That’s why when you work with us, our resume wizard will do an in depth phone consultation to truly understand your needs.

Save this if you’re preparing for interviews, and share it with someone who’s updated their resume but hasn’t practiced their answers yet.

How to Secure a Traineeship When You Have Zero Experience?

One of the biggest myths I see every single day is this:

“I can’t apply because I don’t have experience.”

If you’re looking at traineeships and thinking you’re under-qualified, this post is for you.

The truth is traineeships are designed for people with little to no experience. What employers are really looking for is potential, attitude, and trainability, not a long work history.

Here’s how tailored resumes, cover letters, and the right online platforms can completely change your chances:

✈️When you’re applying for traineeships, a generic resume is your biggest setback.

A tailored entry-level resume should:
• Focus on transferable skills (communication, reliability, teamwork, time management)
• Highlight school subjects, volunteering, part-time or casual work, even unpaid experience
• Clearly show why you want the traineeship, not just where you’ve worked
• Be structured for ATS systems (the software that scans resumes before a human ever sees them)

✈️For traineeships, the cover letter often matters more than the resume.

A strong traineeship cover letter should:
• Explain why you want to learn, not why you’re already qualified
• Show enthusiasm for the industry, not just “any job”
• Match the language of the job ad
• Clearly communicate work ethic, availability, and willingness to be trained

✈️Many traineeships are never advertised where people expect.

Yes, SEEK can be useful.
But the real opportunities are often found through:
• Group Training Organisations (GTOs)
• Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)
• Employer-direct application portals
• Government-supported traineeship programs
• Industry-specific job boards

Getting into @inside_bhp doesn’t always mean you need years of experience 👇🏼

BHP traineeships are designed to help you earn while you learn, gain nationally recognised qualifications, and build a long-term career in mining and resources.

Why BHP traineeships are worth considering:
• Open to entry-level candidates
• Structured training + mentoring
• Real pathways into permanent roles
• Competitive pay while you learn
• One of Australia’s most recognised employers

What a lot of people don’t realise?
Your resume and application matter just as much as meeting the eligibility criteria. Even your online platforms such as SEEK and LinkedIn are looked at. If you don’t clearly show your transferable skills, motivation, and alignment with BHP values, you’re likely to be overlooked.

Don’t disappoint yourself before you even get started!

If you’re thinking about applying for the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) Rail Operations/Shunting Traineeship in Port Hedland, that’s a great ambition, these roles can be life-changing. But before you hit submit, here’s the critical truth many applicants don’t realise.

Applying without a strategic, tailored resume dramatically reduces your chances of getting an interview, no matter how capable you are.

Here’s why:

✈️FMG Uses ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems)✈️

Big mining companies like FMG don’t just read resumes, they scan them first.

Their system looks for specific keywords, skills, and phrases that match the job description. If your resume doesn’t mirror the language and competencies they’re looking for, even if you do have the skills, the ATS may automatically rank you out.

🚫 Generic resumes = filtered out
✅ Strategic resumes = through to recruiter review

Comment “FMG” below and we will email you our FREE FIFO Handbook for 2026, and from there we can also provide a FREE Resume Health Check

MINDFUL MONDAY 🧠

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) work is defined as “circumstances of work where the place of work is sufficiently isolated from the worker’s place of residence to make daily commute impractical”.

In a 2018 report for the Mental Health Commission, the research showed that, even when taking account of associated risk factors such as age and education, there is a GREATER risk of mental ill health amongst those workers operating under FIFO work arrangements.

FIFO Happiness is an online program from our partners at @happiness__co that has been designed to help FIFO workers relax and learn pre-emptive mental health tools and tips to thrive in what can be a stressful and isolating environment 👷👷‍♀️🪨🏜️

Designed and delivered by people who have lived the on-site lifestyle, it aims to support FIFO workers AND their families with any challenges they may be facing.

The non-clinical, practical and realistic tools for happiness are:

🔆 Research driven
🔆 Evidence-based
🔆 And facilitated with engagement as the priority

We ensure that programs like FIFO Happiness are available for employees to vend from any FIFO site-based Wellness Stations.

Love - Kindness - Decency

Practicing kindness, love, and decency towards ourselves is essential for overall well-being and happiness. Here are some top tips to start being more kind, loving, and decent towards ourselves:

✅ Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a close friend. Recognize that you are human, and it’s okay to make mistakes and face challenges.

✅ Positive Self-Talk: Pay attention to your inner dialogue. Replace self-criticism and negative thoughts with positive affirmations and constructive self-talk. Encourage and uplift yourself.

✅ Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to things that drain your energy or do not serve your well-being. Setting healthy boundaries is an act of self-respect and self-care.

✅ Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a habit of gratitude by acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of your life. Focus on what you have rather than what you lack.

✅ Self-Care: Prioritize your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Engage in activities that nourish your body and soul, such as exercise, hobbies, meditation, or spending time in nature.

✅ Forgive Yourself: Let go of past mistakes and regrets. Understand that everyone makes errors, and these experiences contribute to personal growth and learning.

✅ Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrating your successes reinforces a positive self-image and boosts self-confidence.

✅ Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for support and encouragement when needed. Opening up to others can provide perspective and validation.

✅ Set Realistic Goals: Break down your goals into manageable steps and be realistic about what you can achieve. Celebrate progress along the way and be gentle with yourself if things don’t go as planned.

Remember, practicing kindness, love, and decency towards yourself is an ongoing journey. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you cultivate these qualities in your life.
