⚠️ Perennial & Annual Ryegrass Toxicity in Horses ⚠️

Not all ryegrass is safe for horses! Perennial ryegrass toxicosis is caused by the fungus Epichloë festucae, which produces the neurotoxin Lolitrem B, leading to muscle tremors, ataxia, and collapse. Annual ryegrass toxicosis is caused by the bacterium Rathayibacter toxicus, which produces corynetoxins, causing similar neurological symptoms.

🚨 Symptoms: Tremors, stumbling, stiff gait, incoordination, eye spasms, collapse.
⏳ Onset: 2–6 days after ingestion.
🛑 Prevention: Avoid contaminated pastures, test hay, and monitor horses closely.

🐍 be prepared, practice & carry a kit with you! ⛑️ 🐴

🐴 First Aid for rattlesnake bites to the face:
1. Have a kit (link in my bio)
2. Practice touching your horses nostrils A LOT
3. Carry a 6-7” hose & lubricant on trails
4. Medical tape can be used to hold in place if needed
5. Push the hose in slowly to the natural stopping point
6. The swelling will hold the hose in place but if the swelling happens before you insert the hose, there’s a high chance of suffocation (💔)
7. You are your horse’s first responder, learn what to do
8. @firstaidequine I teach classes ! DM me to Host one at your facility

We were fortunate to have Steven Wood at IRON’s Rodeo #8, whose portraits are renowned for capturing raw emotion and the essence of his subjects in candid moments. Steven’s journey with us began unexpectedly at Rodeo #6, where he accompanied a hat maker and captured some of the most compelling black & white shots of the cowboys and cowgirls.

For this event, he set up a Western Portrait Workshop and photo booth, with styling support from Lena Koch and Zuza Isham. Steven’s portfolio is a testament to his ability to tell powerful stories through his work, documenting the lives of over 1.5 million Rohingyan refugees in Bangladesh, capturing everyday life of women in markets in Congo, Dominican Republic, and Mexico, and showcasing the stories of the Amaru tribe in Peru. His humanitarian work, often in partnership with Hope Humanitarian, highlights the depth and compassion in his photography. Check out his stunning portraits from IRON’s Malibu Cowgirl.

Rattlesnake bite items: 4 skin protectant lubricant for the hose, 7” Rubber Hose for bites to horses face

A week ago I led a @firstaidequine workshop for @iron.usa ⛑️ 🐴 I taught the most beautiful, inspiring and energy lifting guests & cowgirls how to be the first responder for their horse.

☀️ The day was long and hot but I’m still on a high from it because of the folks that showed up. The women that led the workshops, music, and the catering and drink services, I mean real powerhouse females. We all came together as one and put on a day I’ll never forget. But most importantly, we put ourselves out there to the unexpected and look at the community we found! 🔥

Thank you @the.siegel and your crew @iron.usa … a hell of a day my friends 🤠🫶 #malibucowgirl #ironusa

📸 And @trentschlamp for these photos, I had a feeling you would be next level talented … I was right! Loved meeting you & Judy!! ✨

IRON’s Rodeo #8 represents an exclusive and cowgirl-dedicated sanctuary, aimed at further educating experienced as well as novice cowgirls. With workshops and activity hubs ranging from natural horsemanship, leather-making, equine first-aid, to Western content and styling, hat shaping and equine therapy — this retreat is a hands-on experience.

By sunset we also invite the cowboys to join and gather around a ranch-style dinner, with music, cowboy poetry and storytelling.

With the rapid growth of IRON’s Rodeo events, the team aims to make our Eight Edition a more exclusive gathering. Focused on immersing IRON’s cowgirls in the Western lifestyle, the event includes workshops stations led by the most prolific Western pioneers.

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, IRON will host Rodeo #8 at a private ranch in Malibu/Topanga to bring the event closer to Los Angeles. A luxury shuttle service will transport guests in less than 10mins to the ranch, departing from the iconic Malibu Feed Bin, which has been serving ranches in the Santa Monica Mountains since 1966.
