Every woman deserves to feel safe, heard and cared for when she gives birth. 🤎

October is Black History Month here in the UK, and I want to take a moment to talk about Black women’s experiences of pregnancy, birth and those early days of motherhood.

In @fivexmore_ ‘s 2025 Black Maternity Experiences Report, 49% of respondents who raised concerns during labour or birth felt those concerns weren’t properly addressed - That is almost half of those who spoke up.

Behind that number is a woman trying to tell someone that something doesn’t feel right, asking for help at one of the most vulnerable times in her life.

Being listened to should never be something you have to fight for.

As a doula, so much of what matters to me is taking the time to get to know the woman in front of me. Understanding what helps her feel safe, what worries her and what matters to her. Supporting her to explore her choices and standing alongside her when she needs her voice to be heard.

That also means recognising racism, questioning my own assumptions and continuing to learn from Black women and Black birth workers; and it also means making room for stories of joy, loving support and positive birth experiences too. Black women deserve to see those possibilities reflected around them.

Five X More is an important place to learn more about these experiences and the changes women are asking for.

How I lost my baby son — & why I believe more women need to know about cervical insufficiency.

Cervical insufficiency, sometimes described as a weak or shortening cervix, can cause the cervix to open too early in pregnancy — often with few or no obvious warning signs. This can increase the risk of second-trimester pregnancy loss or very premature birth. In my own pregnancies, cervical insufficiency led to premature labour

For women with a history of second-trimester loss, very premature birth or known cervical problems, early specialist review in a future pregnancy can be incredibly important. Monitoring may include transvaginal cervical-length scans, usually during the second trimester, and some women may be offered treatment such as progesterone or a cervical cerclage depending on their history and clinical assessment.

This is why I believe conversations about cervical health should begin before or very early in pregnancy for women who may be at increased risk — rather than only after another loss has occurred.

Another area worth discussing after recurrent pregnancy loss is antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Blood tests can include lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein I antibodies. These tests are not needed for every woman, but they may be recommended when there has been recurrent pregnancy loss or certain pregnancy complications.

Knowledge cannot prevent every loss. But earlier recognition, appropriate investigation and specialist care can make a meaningful difference for some families.

During this awareness week, I am sharing my story because I want more women to know what questions they can ask, what symptoms or history may need further investigation, and when to seek specialist support.

Let’s hope more change is coming.

Our beautiful daughter Kayda-Grae entered the world at just 23 weeks. She fought so hard for almost two months before we had to say goodbye.

Years later I still wonder who she would have become, what her little voice would have sounded like and what life would look like with all four of my children here.
Because one of the hardest parts of losing a child isn’t just saying goodbye. It’s learning to live with all the tomorrows you never got to share.

This Baby Loss Awareness Week I’m remembering our precious girl, the babies we miscarried and every baby whose life was far too short but whose love will last a lifetime.

To every parent carrying a baby in their heart rather than a child in their arms, your baby will never be forgotten. 🕊️🤍

For some, the journey to motherhood is filled with uncertainty, pain, loss and unanswered questions. For others, the hardest part is coming to terms with the possibility that motherhood may never happen for them.

Not everyone who is childless chose to be. Not every loss comes with a funeral. Not every heartbreak is visible.

This Black History Month, we want to recognise Five X More, an organisation founded by two Black mothers who came together after seeing and experiencing the inequalities faced by Black women in UK maternity care.

While the latest figures have changed, the disparity remains significant, and Five X More continues to campaign, educate, support Black women and birthing people, and work with healthcare professionals and policymakers to improve outcomes.

That's why inclusive maternity care means seeing the whole person.

It means listening without assumptions.

Taking concerns seriously.

Providing information people can understand.

Respecting culture, identity, and individual choices.

Recognising when someone may need additional support.

And making sure that every parent can feel safe, respected, and heard.

Honouring our communities means listening to those experiences, learning from them, and working together to make maternity care safer and more equitable for everyone.
