Props to those who paved the way.

Rex Navarrete did that for many of the funny Filipino people we see today.

But there’s always someone who inspired your inspiration.

In our conversation with Rex, he talks about how he feels about getting the “Icon” title and those comedians that he saw who looked like him and knowing there was a path for him to follow.

And for the millennials in the back, Lorenzo Matawaran is the real name of comedian and actor Buzz Belmondo from the late 80s and early 90s sitcom “Out of This World.”

Once again, huge shoutout to @thestudioligaya and @mariteslol.co for allowing us to have this conversation.

We’re doing it again! But thankfully, this time we had a little more lead time.

Which means I actually get to do a fresh production run of Toasty Polvo® samples to share at this Sunday’s Sosyal before the @forgottenislandmovie screening in Times Square!

We’ll have a limited number of samples available, and we’re excited to be part of another community gathering supporting Filipino stories on the big screen.

Wanna join us? Follow @ourfilipinograndma for all the details! This event is primarily for new TapTap Send signups, so be sure to check the participation details before making plans.

And while you’re here, give our community partners and sponsors a follow! They’re helping make gatherings like this possible:

“the less filipino you are, and the more american you are, the better off you will be.”
— @ejrdavidphd, author of brown skin, white minds

october is filipino american history month, and this quote comes to mind when i think about how performative the recognition can be. the irony of honoring an identity they tried to erase.

i was born in cebu and moved to america when i was nine. i became an american citizen before turning 18 and pledged allegiance to a country that once colonized ours. my parents bought into the promise of the american dream, but somewhere along the way, we lost touch with our own identity. when they both passed, what had we really gained from a dream sold to us by the very country that exploited us?

then i met eric and his family this year. i grew up with three brothers and four sisters, but distance shaped so much of our relationships. watching how close eric and his family remain as they navigate a new life in america reminds me of what we filipinos bring to this country. we’re natural caregivers, but sometimes we need reminding to care for our own. being welcomed into their family has given me a sense of belonging i’d been missing for much of my life. somehow, having a seat at their table feels like home.

439 years ago on October 18 today, the first Filipinos landed on the shores of what would become the United States. Our story here is older than the country itself.

—

Drive 20 minutes from San Luis Obispo like @sunshinedgtl did and you’ll find Morro Bay, the first chapter of Filipino history in America.

On October 18, 1587, the galleon Nuestra Señora de Buena Esperanza landed by Morro Bay through the Galeón ships. Here, Filipinos, then referred to as indios luzones, made contact with the Chumash people.

This moment became the first recorded presence of Asians in the continental United States, predating the Saint Malo settlement in Louisiana by nearly two centuries.

For centuries, this landing went unrecognized until the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), founded by Dorothy and Fred Cordova in 1992, worked to recover and honor it.

Through their efforts, Morro Bay was officially dedicated in 1995. Each October, Filipino American History Month continues to commemorate this pivotal moment.

For many, the landing at Morro Bay represents the intertwined story of Filipinos in the United States, a reminder that while this was the beginning of our recorded history here, community efforts ensure our stories continue to live on.

Psssstt—From the islands of the Philippines to the island of Manhattan, a pre-event social and community screening of “Forgotten Island” is taking over AMC Empire 25 Times Square on Sunday, October 25 starting at 2pm!

✋Why attend?
October is Filipino History Month, and this will definitely be a gathering with supporters of the Filipino American community. This gathering will be filled with Filipino American organizations, content creators, local Filipino food businesses, performers, and a company sponsor with a Filipino American team member leading the sponsorship!

“Forgotten Island” is part of Filipino American history. This might be the last or one of the last showings of the “Forgotten Island” movie in AMC Times Square so let’s continue to support this historical film that celebrates Filipino culture and a FilAm cast including a co-director.

It’s the weekend, so let’s take time to relax, have fun, and create memories by attending this community movie event with family, kaibigan, self time.

👀 What to expect?
Starting at 2pm, we will have a private pre event social for all movie ticket holders at the AMC lobby area. This social will include Filipino food from local businesses to sample and buy ( including to bring to the movie).

Between 3-3:30pm, doors will be open to take your seats in the movie theater. During this time, we’ll have some performances from local performers and a quick message from sponsors

At 3:30pm, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the showing of the “Forgotten Island” movie!

🎟️ How to get tickets?
We will be offering 3 priority options to get “Forgotten Island” movie tickets. Please note that seating capacity is capped at 195.

1. Send money to the 🇵🇭 using TaptapSend. New users can download the app, sign up (you just need a valid U.S. ID), and send $50 to a family, friend, or a cause who uses a Philippine personal bank account. First 50 sign ups.

Rex in effect! 🐹📫🤣

Don’t sleep on PDX solidarity. Filipinos live by the collective and that’s evident when we spoke to Comedy Icon Rex Navarrete when he visited New Jersey. ✊🏽

Musician Talilo featured a cameo of Rex on his video for “Umaga” with Nump and we had to ask about it. 🎶📦🤪

Hear more about Rex and what he thinks about his status as a pioneer as a Filipino comedian and more in this interview with Future Ancestors. 🗣️

Check out the audio version with Rex Navarrete where you find your podcasts now! Best way to find us is logging on to www.futureancestors.tv!

Big shout out to The Studio Ligaya, Mari Mallari and Rex for allowing us to have this conversation! @thestudioligaya @mariteslol.co
