Bringing African trans voices into international human rights spaces is essential to ensuring that the realities of our communities are part of the conversations that shape our rights.

Last month, ATN Programmes Officer Brandy Akoth participated in Trans Advocacy Week 2026 in Geneva alongside trans activists and partners from around the world, culminating in the opportunity to deliver a statement during the 62nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In her latest reflection, Brandy shares what she learned, why these global advocacy spaces matter, and how they strengthen the work of trans movements across Africa.

Le mois dernier, Brandy Akoth, chargée des programmes de l’ATN, a participé à la Semaine de plaidoyer trans 2026 à Genève, aux côtés de militant·e·s trans et de partenaires du monde entier. Cette semaine s’est conclue par une intervention lors de la 62e session du Conseil des droits de l’homme des Nations Unies.

For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the @internationaltransfund (ITF) Grantmaking Panel (GMP). It has been one of the most rewarding, and heartbreaking roles I’ve held.
🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️
Heartbreaking because every grant cycle, we review applications from incredible trans-led organisations doing vital work in some of the world’s most hostile contexts. The painful reality is that we cannot fund many of them; not because their work isn’t worthy, but because there simply isn’t enough funding. Reading through the applications, you feel the intensity of the precarity of our movement and the innovative work that is being done across the world by trans activists.

As the world’s only trans-led, exclusively trans-focused funder, ITF understands that those closest to our communities are best placed to decide where resources should go. ITF grantmaking model puts decision-making power in the hands of trans activists who understand our realities, our challenges and our hopes.

Last month, during our in-person decision-making meeting for the 10th grant cycle in Mauritius, I was reminded once again that the biggest barrier facing our movement isn’t a lack of vision or leadership, it’s a often lack of resources.

If you’re a donor, philanthropic institution or ally looking to make a meaningful impact, this is my ask: FUND TRANS MOVEMENTS. Fund International Trans Fund (ITF). Flexible, long-term funding enables our communities not only to respond to crisis but to build lasting change. ITF in partnership with @gateorg - Global Action for Trans Equality is planning a Global Trans Conferencein 2027 - we need all the support we can get to make that happen please 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

In less than a week, it’s time for the AIDS 2026 pre-conference: Women Know What Works!

This afternoon pre-conference will bring together a diversity of voices of women living with HIV from around the world as well as international experts to focus upon women living with HIV in relation to prevention, treatment, care and quality of life. Topics will range from sexual and reproductive health and rights, criminalization, stigma and other topics affecting women living with HIV both globally and in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

SC dismisses fundamental rights petition challenging gender change circular

The Supreme Court has decided to dismiss, without taking up for consideration, a Fundamental Rights petition seeking an order to invalidate a circular permitting individuals in Sri Lanka to legally change their gender.

The petition named former Presidents Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe, as well as incumbent President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, among its respondents, said Ada Derana reporter.

The petition was filed by Shantha Jayathilake, a retired disabled Warrant Officer of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

It is no secret that conservative agendas are mainstreamed in the UN lately.

The Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls released a report at HRC62 on violence against mothers that reduces women and gender diverse persons to their reproductive capacities.

The report waters down the right to abortion and undermines the agency and autonomy of marginalised communities.

Together, @NSWP, @WHRIN, @GATE and @ICW living with HIV, and AWID delivered a statement with a clear message: bodily autonomy is a non-negotiable and a fundamental right for all.

The right to dignity and self-determination of trans people, sex workers, women who use drugs, and women living HIV must be recognized, protected, and upheld.
