This coming Monday, we will be holding space to remember George Floyd and all victims of police terror and white supremacy. We continue to fight for justice and equality for African Americans in this country.

George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis, MN in 2020, just a few blocks away from the Target headquarters. Target, shortly after pledged billions in support for the Black community and committed itself to diversity and racial equity programs. In 2025, they rolled all of that progress back, to fall in line with the Trump administration’s attacks on DEI and affirmative action.

Join us as we commemorate the life of George Floyd alongside faith leaders, labor unions and social justice organizations.

In recognition of Reverend Graylan Hagler’s life and legacy, we have chosen to POSTPONE this Sunday’s JVP-DC Metro chapter meeting (originally on 3/1) so as not to conflict with Rev. Hagler’s funeral, happening this Sunday, 3/1 at 3pm at Plymouth Congregation UCC (5301 North Capitol St NE). We will provide further information as to the new date of our next Chapter Meeting soon.

As many of you may know, last week Rev. Hagler passed away. As a community, we are grieving a profound loss. Rev. Hagler was a titanic figure in the DC human rights, economic justice, and racial justice movements, and was an outspoken critic of Zionism and injustice in Palestine and beyond.

He was a force in DC social justice movements for decades, demanding change for our communities without fear and with an unmatched kindness and dedication. He used his position within the Church to challenge assumptions about the Church’s support for Zionism and to advocate for Palestinian human rights at a time when doing so was unpopular and extremely difficult. He was always an ally of the Palestinian people and of JVP. Many individual JVP-DC Metro members had close relationships with him, have many fond memories, and were honored to have stood alongside him to speak out for numerous causes. He spoke at a number of @jewishvoiceforpeace @jvpdcmetro rallies, such as the one posted here from December of 2016.

He also spearheaded DC’s Target boycott campaign @boycotttargetdc when Target dropped its DEI programs, supported collective bargaining rights for low-wage workers, and was a lifelong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, among other admirable work. We encourage all community members to attend Rev. Hagler’s funeral this Sunday to celebrate his life, honor his legacy, and follow in his footsteps as we fight for justice in DC, Palestine, and beyond.

May his memory be for a blessing and a revolution.

In solidarity,
JVP-DC Metro

“you’ll always be with us.”

thinking back to times of laughs, encouragement & conviction w/ @graylanhagler. his legacy will live on in those he fought for and built with. read some of his words at the end slides 🙌🏼.

my limited time with him include memories of him opening up his congregation in less than 24hrs when @mohammedelkurd Palestinian poet’s event was canceled at American University, disrupting @councilofdc several times demanding a Ceasefire resolution w/ @dc4palestine , demonstrating in front of the MLK memorial addressing the 3 evils w/ @dcpoorpeoplescampaign @codepinkdc @claudiajonesschool , delivering a petition outside of Pepperdine to get Johnnie Moore of the Gaza “Humanitarian” Foundation fired, celebrating at the Peace Ball & at his @busboysandpoets tribute, and reading more of his stories of his labor and faith struggles in MA & Baltimore, and Palestine. 🕊️

even if you didn’t know Reverend Hagler, folks are encouraged to go to his celebration of life ..as he’s touched people across the world, there’s also a virtual option.

Remembering the Reverend Graylan Scott Hagler #Seetheleast

On Ash Wednesday 2024, Rev. Graylan Scott Hagler performed a powerful ritual and during a service organized by Christians for Ceasefire & Just Peace. Rev. Hagler marked participants’ hands with a cross of red liquid “as a sign of our collective guilt but also of a sign of our resistance to the continued bloodshed”. In his reflection, Rev. Hagler stated, “We remind on ourselves that as there’s ashes on our heads, there’s also blood on our hands. ...We cannot exempt ourselves from what this country is doing; they do it in our name; they do it with our dollars; they do it with our consent; begin to take away consciously your consent to the crimes…”

Christians are called to speak and act on behalf of the poor and oppressed, to speak the Truth. Yet the Liberal church establishment for the most part hesitated to even call out the Gaza genocide and now has largely moved on. A longstanding advocate for Palestinian liberation, Graylan never hesitated to advocate for those oppressed and cast aside. He was formidable and relentless in confronting power that choses status quo benefits over liberating change.

He passed away yesterday February 17, 2026. His transition is a tremendous and painful loss. May this fierce warrior for justice rest in power and may those remaining embody his Spirit in their struggles for liberation.
