Book Club for October had a banger of a pick in the sense that it gave us endless fodder for discussion: Adult Braces by Lindy West about her cross-country roadtrip while she contemplates her marriage after learning her husband has a serious girlfriend. We had SO MUCH to say about this book, which I will try to distill into three separate not so brief buckets:

1. Ban memoirs for people under the age of 80. You don't have enough distance from a story that's still unfolding and also there are too many people you're trying to protect, including your own self-image, so you lie. In Lindy's case, it's the disappointing revelation that she omitted from the happy ending of Shrill (which made her one of the leading voices in the body positivity movement) that actually her husband wanted an open marriage and also she has an incredibly complicated and self-loathing relationship with her body. And she's essentially trapped in a narrative she created about being happy and in love.

2. Her writing is extremely voicey but I don't think her voice has aged well. So much sounds like the parody of Millennials that Zoomers do on TikTok. Her descriptions of people she meets on the road are deeply ungenerous. She's constantly talking about the judgement and mockery she receives as a fat person but maybe she assumes everyone thinks the worst about her because she's also thinking the worst about everyone else. It's like the 30 Rock episode when Liz realizes she wasn't being bullied because she was a nerd... it's because she was a bitch. (Lindy doesn't make this connection.) It's a tiresome ouroboros of loathing from an unhappy person.

3. Girl, get up. Do I believe ethical non-monogamy exists? Sure! Do I think your husband, who you love desperately, railroaded you into a throuple? Yeah, kind of! Lindy needs to get out of Seattle and meet some regular degular Black people so when someone says to her, "monogamy is ownership" she can laugh in his fucking clown face instead of making herself a prisoner to her own wokeness and agree that as a white woman she probably doesn't get it. Scream.

This year's @tiff_net will be memorable for reminding us of the breadth and impact of this storytelling community.

From another incredible edition of @tfmentorship that brought the legend @beverlyglenncopeland to share some words and a song (I'm not 😭) on life, art and resilience. BTS Summer is officially over, but what remains are the memories, the sense of community, and the overwhelming gratitude I have for this entire experience. This whole summer was an exercise in prioritizing fun, adventure and going full delulu. And with zero hyperbole, it was ✨MAGICAL✨. It also reinforced the belief that passion and joy should always be shared. Don’t gatekeep the things you love. Happiness is meant to be given freely and cherished with the ones you love. You never know who’s watching and who needs the reminder that life is full of fun. Joy is infinite and the more you put out, the more you receive. This is the lesson I’ve learned from this truly incredible summer and one that I’ll keep with me forever.

The ONLY regret I have is I didn’t get a pic of @stephanie_malek @kyahgreen @shannon_lahaie who are also a big part of the best summer I’ve had in my adult life. We’ll do it on the next tour 😉

Thank you for going on this adventure with me. Thank you to every single Army who I talked to, who approached me, who shared freebies, who showed kindness, all of it. And thank you to everyone that reached out to say they loved watching the tsunami of videos/pics of my clear and instantaneous descent into hornty-induced madness. I hope it inspires you to do things for yourself that spark joy. 💜
