“Last spring, Harold Bennally, a 37-year-old Diné #ultrarunner, crossed the finish line of the Boston #Marathon wearing a pair of high-topped red leather moccasins—likely the first time anyone had #run the famous race in traditional Diné footwear. To raise funds to send him to the event, Bennally organized the Canyon X Half Marathon: a race through a remote portion of Antelope Canyon in LeChee, Arizona, far from the tourist-heavy lower section.
The inaugural event, in 2018, was a success, with 98 #runners traveling from across the Southwest to participate. Bennally and other organizers, including the Red Earth Running Company, which sponsors Native #running events and athletes, brought it back for a second time last fall. On a brisk day in November, 168 runners gathered to run a 13-mile course that climbed 1,800 feet across sandstone canyons and remote washes.”

Last November I ran the most breathtaking (beautiful, amazing) #halfmarathon in my life: #CanyonX in #Lechee #Arizona (my 15th)🏜🏃🏽‍♀️Special highlights were the people I met there, the amazing handmade finishers’ award and the gorgeous views of red rock slot canyons✊🏽🌝🙏🏽✨ Going back this year!

Back in 2002 I purchased this gorgeous photo of this 'mysteriously' beautiful canyon, last year in January when I ran my first race to kick start 2019, I picked the @redearthrunco Canyon X #Marathon in support of @haroldbennally moccasin running journey. Looooong story short this journey brought me to the very same place this photo was taken! ...today’s #run was something else. Stopped a few times I thought I was hearing things, seen a guy from the ridge I was on he was North of me about 200 feet below my altitude coming down from the other ridge from the National Trail. Screaming, crying, saying things directing to suicide. The person going through tough time and no one was there or trying to get to him. Down the trail two females were concerned and called authorities and I told em I will go down to see if he is alright, I tangent off my course opposite way and made my way down the switch backs of single track into the Pima Wash. Came up on him faster than I thought and offered my help, he didn’t want it so I hung around for a moment to decide to follow or turn back to trailhead, so I knew someone was coming that will help him more than I could and raced down towards trail head and gave descriptions of the person. Suicide is a serious cry for help. If you know someone or even yourself think that way, talk to someone. There are people at your reach willing to listen and help how ever way. There are phone numbers to call and they will set you up to see someone you can open up to that stays confidential. I ran out of water on my run before I got to him and made me think of him when I filled my bottle back up I hope the next drink of water he takes will help him feel better, life is worth living for.
