🇫🇮🇪🇺 Finland’s quantum expertise can help strengthen Europe’s global leadership

How can Europe turn its scientific excellence in quantum technologies into global leadership, competitive businesses and industrial growth?

This was the focus of the briefing The EU Quantum Act – Scaling Competitiveness in Practice, held at the Permanent Rempresentation of Finland to the EU on 22 October. EU policymakers, industry leaders and quantum experts discussed how the forthcoming EU Quantum Act can support investment, help quantum companies scale up and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness.

🇫🇮 Finland’s quantum ecosystem brings together world-class research, innovative companies and specialised infrastructure. By building on these strengths and fostering collaboration across Europe, Finland can help turn scientific breakthroughs into industrial innovation and new global opportunities.

Ambassador Lauri Hirvonen welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of cooperation in advancing Europe’s quantum ambitions.

🤝 Thank you to Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and all our speakers and panellists — MEP Aura Salla, CEO Jan Goetz, CEO Kim Povlsen, Director Erja Turunen and Attaché Roberta Ragaišytė — as well as CSC and everyone who joined us in Brussels for an insightful discussion!

The event was organised by the Permanent Representation of Finland to the EU, IQM Quantum Computers, Bluefors, Technology Industries of Finland and VTT.

How are Irish workplaces navigating the AI transition? 🤖🇮🇪

New Eurobarometer data reveals a picture of how SMEs and mid-caps in Ireland approach artificial intelligence and algorithmic management in the workplace.

While 13% of Irish businesses plan to adopt AI tools in the next two years (ahead of the EU average), questions around high investment costs and workforce trust remain.

Today, these themes are under discussion in Dublin as Taoiseach Micheál Martin, European Commissioners Henna Virkkunen, Michael McGrath, and Ekaterina Zaharieva gather for the International AI Summit.

EU Code Week 2026 is officially underway!

Today, voices from across Europe came together with a shared ambition: making coding, AI literacy and digital skills more accessible, inclusive and empowering for everyone.

Opening the EU Code Week 2026 Launch Event, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, highlighted the role of Code Week in advancing Europe's digital ambitions: “Code Week significantly contributes to this ambition, attracting students to digital literacy, algorithmic thinking and programming in a creative and enjoyable way.”

Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, reminded young people of their power to shape the future of technology:
“You’re the ones who will decide what AI becomes. Ultimately, it’s about the kind of Europe we want, one that shapes its own future on its own terms.”

For Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe, Code Week is also about unlocking young people's curiosity and potential:
“It’s about the curiosity of young people and the opportunities that they want to create for themselves.”

Throughout the event, Diana Filip, Deputy CEO & Chief Development Officer at JA Europe, guided conversations bringing together educators, policymakers, industry representatives and the Code Week community. From inspiring community stories to discussions on resilience in the age of AI and bridging the digital skills gap, the launch highlighted the power of collaboration in making digital education more inclusive.

Closing the event, Renate Nikolay, Deputy Director-General at DG CONNECT, reinforced the importance of digital skills for Europe's competitiveness and sovereignty, calling for a digital Europe that is inclusive, innovative and safe.

And this is only the beginning! EU Code Week runs from 10–25 October, bringing communities across Europe together to learn, create and innovate.

Because digital education is about more than technology. It's about giving young people the confidence, creativity and opportunities to shape their own future.

If you work in music or the creative industries, sign the Music Equality petition.(link in bio)

No more voluntary promises, hiding behind “innovation.”…and asking creators to pay the price after the fact.

We want action and enforcement.

What was said in the European Parliament about the Kids Act?

Henna Virkkunen: "For too long, our children have been engaging with technologies that were never created with their well-being in mind."

Veronika Ostrihonova: "Blocking unwanted contacts of adults towards minors on social media is not limiting freedom of speech.

Markéta Gregorová: "We all want children to be safe online, but instead of trying to keep them off the internet, why not make the internet safer for everyone?"

Maria Guzenina: "Only half of children across Europe say they feel safe online. It's about cyberbullying, grooming, harmful content, addictive design. It is a wild west with not enough sheriffs on duty, so we must act now."

📢 On 29 September, more than 280 attendees from around the world joined our Policy Talk "INNOVATE. PROTECT. EMPOWER. How cultural heritage can make Public AI a reality". 🌍

Organised by @europeana_eu as a digital partner of the European Heritage Hub, the event brought together speakers from the European Commission, the European Parliament and UNESCO, together with voices from across the AI and cultural heritage ecosystems. Their message: cultural heritage cannot remain passive, and Europe needs a value-based, human-centred approach to AI grounded in the public interest.

The Policy Talk also marked the launch of our campaign INNOVATE. PROTECT. EMPOWER., calling on the European Commission to recognise cultural heritage as a key partner in Europe's Public AI ecosystem.
