Shooting a place you know by heart has its own challenge: you have to look past the habits of seeing it every day. Chasing the light from Burlington waterfront and Leddy Beach in the morning, @foambrewers in the afternoon, to @henofthewood after sunset, I found corners of the city that felt new again.

New @nytimestravel 5 Favorite Places ✈️

Apple picking, lake swims, “creemees” 🍦(Vermont folks know what’s up), and TJ Maxx runs.

That’s what a trip home to Burlington, Vt. looks like for the multi-talented (rugby star/podcaster/TikTok sensation) @ilonamaher. You learn that the memories, fall foliage 🍂 and the simple joys of her hometown is why it’s one of her favorite places. Thanks for the conversation 🙏🏾

Here are all the things I did in the Burlington/Stowe/Waterbury area of Vermont that were near and dear to my heart⬇️⏭️

1,2,3: @savu.sauna in Burlington — this reminded me so much of my time in Copenhagen. Watching an incredible sunset behind the Adirondacks while cold plunging and going to the sauna is a memory I’ll never forget!

4: A splendid lunch @philoridgefarm near Burlington — that short rib burger was something else ngl. 😭

5,6: My first solo hike and likely the most challenging one I’ve ever done called the Stowe Pinnacle hike which overlooks Mt. Mansfield!

7: Treated myself to a fancy dinner @henofthewood in Waterbury. What a beautiful setup, the most delicious oysters, and crackers, jelly, and aged @jasperhillfarm cheese. Of course, I also had to get the mushroom toast to honour the restaurant’s name!

8: Stargazing — my favourite pastime. Can’t wait to use my new @n_o_c_s binoculars next time!

9: Couldn’t go to the @benandjerrys factory but found the next best thing at the supermarket — my favourite flavour in bar form!!!

10: Walked the Stowe Recreation Path and enjoyed another sunset in a random field. 🌅

11,12,13: I try my best not to go to classic touristy spots when I’m travelling but this was SO good that I went back 3 times. @coldhollowcidermillvt is a MUST visit and you have to get the cider donut and maple creemee!!

14: Love a good fried chicken sandwich and this one at @doc_ponds delivered!

15: Walked along the Burlington Greenway while enjoying my 1000th maple creemee. I’m supposedly “mildly” allergic to maple but whatever😂

16: My first visit to a glass blowing studio and it was of my friend @nea_arentzen ‘s parents’ small business @ao_glass . So glad I got to support them!

17: Sad to report that @phohongbvt has RUINED pho for me anywhere else. Hands down the best pho I’ve ever had. I should have brought back tons of their broth to freeze but my car was too full. 😭

i had heard a lot about vermont farms, but honestly, i didn’t expect much from the restaurant scene before visiting burlington. i guess i was picturing a regular small american town. turns out, it was full of good surprises!! basically a little paradise for food lovers.

@shelburnefarms always down for a farm-to-table experience, especially with a view like this. And of course, the farm store was too good to leave empty-handed

@frankiesvt first dinner was such a lovely welcome, exactly the kind of bistro where i love spending an evening. great vibes, thoughtful service, and food full of comfort and charm. wish i lived nearby so i could come back more often

@augustfirstvt solid bakery for bread, pastries, or a slow lil brekkie. still thinking about that almond croissant, perfectly crisp and buttery!

@onyxtonics stopped by for an iced flat white

@bistro_de_margot for classic french food and a little hit of nostalgia

@greyjayvt wholesome lunch spot. the crispy eggplant sabich was so generous and satisfying

@henofthewood another highlight during this stay. well-sourced local ingredients, a daily changing menu, and the smoky pull of open-fire cooking. everything felt simple in the best way! seasonal, direct, and quietly brilliant. great cocktails too

@lareprisewines a tad pricey for what it is, but perfect for an apéro when lunch is still settling ;)

bref, burlington reaaaally knows its bread and butter. literally!

Day 2:
Hike Stowe Pinnacle (we opted for the meadow hike trail because it was less strenuous)

Sailboat evening

Day 3:
Drive to Woodstock and make a few pit stops along the way
