“Sleep when the baby sleeps” is not a plan.

I joined Dr. Nishi Bhopal, psychiatrist and sleep specialist, on @intrabalance to talk about postpartum sleep: what is normal newborn exhaustion, what might be insomnia, anxiety, or postpartum depression, and how to protect your sleep in the fourth trimester.

One strategy I recommend to almost every family: sleep shifts. Partners or helpers take turns so each person gets one protected block of about 4 to 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Earplugs, white noise, and an eye mask help make that block count.

Sleep is not a luxury after birth. It’s essential for recovery.

Full episode linked in my stories. Share this with someone expecting a baby. 💜

I recently sat down with Dr. Nishi Bhopal of @intrabalance to talk about private practice, and one thing came up that I see constantly in my private practice building program, Dream Practice Academy.

Smart clinicians do not experience fear as fear. We experience it as a “reasonable plan.”

“I will do this job for one or two more years to get experience.” “I will get one more certification first.” “I just need to save a bit more.” Every one of those sounds reasonable. That is exactly the problem. Intellectualization is the defense of choice for people who are used to being the smartest person in the room, and it works because nobody, including you, can tell it apart from prudence.

Here is the tell: you did not learn medicine by taking one more year of lectures. You went to the wards terrified and did it anyway, and that is when you actually learned. Starting a practice is the same. You know enough medicine. The skill set you are missing can only be learned by doing.

Nishi put it perfectly: confidence comes from taking action. You do not stare at the bike until you feel ready.

So if you are listening to this and you are 70 percent ready, start planning now. Waiting for 99 percent is how “later” becomes “never.”

Full interview is on Dr. Bhopal’s YouTube channel.

Perimenopause can last a few years.

For some, it's longer than a few years.

It can bring along a lot of overt signs and symptoms for some ... and not so much for others.

Regardless, there is real hormone change happening that affects your cardiometabolic risk, bones, and longevity. This is especially true in the 2 years on either side of your final period ever.

This is the time to take a pause (get it?!) to see where you're at, what's working well, what's not, understand your body better, and take charge of your health so you can do all the things you want to do now and later in life.

The summit is virtual, it's free to attend between Mon, Sept 21 to Thurs, Sept 24, and has 22 sessions spanning muscle, metabolism, nutrition, mood, heart, bones, and hormones. Watch the ones that speak to you or watch them all. Watch with a colleague or loved one. If you want instant and lifetime access (plus bonus content), grab a VIP Pass (it's discounted before the live event!).
Together is how we change the conversations around perimenopause. Make sure to sign up and share this far and wide: theperimenopausesummit.com

Sleep is a quiet performance enhancer.

Protecting 6+ hours gives your body a real repair window, lowers stress, and can make pain feel less amplified.
Do you treat sleep like part of the treatment plan?
