I worked with an editor at Better Homes & Gardens on many food roundups during the pandemic, but hadn’t written for the brand in some time. This spring, I was delighted when she reached out to reconnect in a new role for the magazine — and gave me my first-ever print assignment for BH&G: a feature on how to get better sleep. This was a perfect example that in the media business, relationships truly create opportunities, exactly the message we talk about daily in @joinpitchcraft. It was really fun to put on my reporting hat again, and coming out of my sleep-deprived postpartum months, I took a lot of my sources’ tips to heart. One of my favorites: Stop obsessing over your nightly sleep score on your fitness tracker (a phenomenon known as orthosomnia). It’s less accurate than you might think, and can negatively impact your day if you received a “poor” score. Focus on how your body feels instead. Check out the piece in the October 2026 print issue, hitting newsstands now!

As of today, I’m an approved journalist on @joinpitchcraft I don’t have a degree in journalism. No MFA. I have never attended a creative writing workshop. After gaining notoriety as a fitness professional, I had the opportunity to write fitness articles. I still remember my first: a SandBell story for Prevention Magazine, 2012. I gathered 12 women to take part in a 6-week test panel on a SandBell and walking workout I created. The article wasn’t just a workout. It was a story. (One woman lost 13 pounds!) It wasn’t until 2020 that I ventured into travel writing. My first piece a story on The Woodhouse Day Spa in Lubbock during the pandemic. I remember writing that the closest thing I’d had to a spa treatment since March was a bath, shared with both of my kids—and one of them was for sure peeing in it. The thing I’ve learned about writing is that it’s not about the words. It’s about the story. People didn’t read about SandBells to learn what to do with a neoprene bag filled with sand. They read to learn how that lady lost 13 pounds. People didn’t read the Woodhouse story to learn about signature treatments. They read because they, too, had kids peeing in their bubble bath and calling it “the spa.” It was a pandemic and we were all in the thick of it. My storytelling skills didn’t come from a classroom. My knack for delivering a great story came from… Dad. Before bed every night, my dad would gather my brothers and me and tell us Granddaddy and Daniel Boone stories. Grandaddy and Daniel Boone were fictional heroes, saving the world one wedding, pig race, burning barn, Christmas Eve, ostrich farm at a time. This takes me back 40 years. The impact of those bedtime stories land on the screen every time I type today. Storytelling is human connection. What I write is a picture of my experience that I hand to you. You look at it and think that could be your experience, too. It connects us. Knowledge and expertise mean something. The story means more. Thanks to Pitchcraft, I will be connecting with more humans and carrying Dad’s legacy of telling great stories. (This was my intro video to Pitchcraft. 👋) #journalist #writer

2010 = the year we met. 2014 = the year we got married. 2021 = the year we founded Pitchcraft together. What’s it like working with your spouse? A lot of trial and error, a lot of shared space, a lot of intentional planning and connection, and a lot of *one* of us talking more than the other 😂 Yesterday we were honored to give an inside tour of @joinpitchcraft to @fpra_state. These kinds of events are so valuable to be able to share what we are all about in Pitchcraft and how lifestyle PR pros can gain ROI from our platform — but also a great chance for us to hone our presentation skills and collaborate together, when we are often working on our own responsibilities. Here’s to the next 5 years of evolving and growing this powerful platform, together 💜💜

How it started ➡️ how it’s going. Five years ago this week I made the very difficult decision to shut down the free virtual event series I’d hosted for about 2 months at the start of the pandemic, connecting PR pros and journalists. It was a chaotic time. We’d left our condo in Chicago, were living and working out of my in-laws’ garage apartment in Alabama with no real home, and also watching our young niece and nephew a lot of the time when schools were closed. I remember shedding a lot of tears and wrestling with uncertainty with closing this chapter. Was I doing the right thing, or making a big mistake? It’s true that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. I had an idea for something bigger, and knew it was now or never for me to take the leap and see where I could take it. There’s been a lot of major life changes in the past 5 years in our journey to launching and growing @joinpitchcraft, alongside growing our family. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. I hope this reminds you that your unique set of skills and experiences IS valuable, and all you have to do is take that first step ✨ PS: I DO NOT swim in the Tennessee River anymore 😆
