Chris Dong is a Los Angeles-based travel journalist and creator who helps consumers travel better. Recently, he’s been expanding his breadth of work from writing articles to producing video and social content, including posts for Afar and Travel + Leisure.

Pitching a journalist a video story is different from pitching a written story, as Chris explains here. The often missed opportunity? Submitting B-roll or photos that immediately illustrate the hook that will grab audiences’ attention.

For example, say you’re repping a new hotel and your client is excited about the opportunity for social coverage. Don’t write a pitch about the opening in general. Instead, lead with one highly specific visual detail (i.e., the world’s first glow-in-the-dark waterslide?) and include a multimedia element to show what it looks like.

We love following along with Chris’s travel adventures and also his career, as he’s modeling what it looks like to be a modern successful travel journalist (PSA: he’s also the aviation columnist for Travel + Leisure’s new Substack!). These sentiments were just a handful of the comments coming through live and through the chatbox following our second Pitchcraft Phone Experiment, which took place last week.

We thoughtfully paired up journalists and PR professionals within our community based on shared personal interests and overlapping coverage/client topics. At noon, we all hopped onto a Zoom call, then went on mute and turned off cameras while everyone made their phone calls. Twenty minutes later, we came back together to talk takeaways — and the overall sentiment in the virtual room was downright jovial.

This small little experiment just reinforces what we’ve known within Pitchcraft all along: Human connection is truly everything. Not only does it make our jobs and careers better, it also improves the quality of our days. That’s something worth celebrating.

What do a pair of shoes kicked off by the door, a casually messy spread of snacks on a kitchen island, and a family dog have in common?

They’re all signs of life inside a real family home—a quality that really sets apart a home tour pitch to an editor.

The landscape for home tours has changed a lot over the last few years, editor @kathybarnes of @betterhomesandgardens told us at our Pitchcraft live event last week. Rather than sending a photographer to shoot original images for every feature, she’s often receiving pitches from interior designers that are already fully styled and shot.

To demonstrate the livability of a home, a good stylist is critical, Kathy says.

For PR teams helping to guide shoots for interior designer clients, the look to go if you’re hoping to land BH&G (or another similar outlet) is warm and homey—so make sure you’re hiring a stylist who can work with that aesthetic and a photographer who can capture the composition and light that bring it to life. 💜

Building relationships means extending the conversation beyond pitches. It’s about connecting as humans, over shared interests, experiences and dreams.

We noticed that many of our journalist and PR members mentioned reading as a favorite hobby, and when we raised the question about whether we should start a book club within Pitchcraft, the response was a resounding YES.

Inside our newly revamped Accountability Groups within Pitchcraft (groups of 6 or less, thoughtfully pairing PR pros and journalists with common ground), we’ve now also created a larger cohort for Pitchcraft’s Book Club.

Our first pick, chosen by @kbogletree, is a fitting title for our community, focused on the greater theme of human connection.

Book club is just for fun, but it’s also yet another way we help to connect the dots between our Pitchcraft community.

Have you read this book yet? Will you be turning the pages alongside us? Comment below to chime in! 💜 by @joinpitchcraft

After years of working in print magazines, journalist Alyssa Morlacci has carried over many editorial principles from her editor days into her new venture. One of the best parts of shifting from in-house editor to her own Substack, though? Her ability to adapt quickly.

Live feedback from her readers for Suite Escapism, a newsletter “for hotel snobs,” allows her to experiment with content and subject lines. Analytics help her to shape future stories, go deeper on the topics that are most popular and even eliminate what’s not resonating. That’s a big difference from more established well-known print titles, which can be slower to adapt to changes.

This evolving process helps her develop a deeper relationship with her audience. And PR pros who understand this can build a strong relationship with Alyssa, too, by getting to know what she’s most focused on, providing access to key sources, and sharing travel news that will pique her interest.

What she’s most looking for now:

    •    Opportunities to review beautiful, distinctive hotels with a strong POV
    •    Experienced travelers (including other writers and founders) to feature in a packing feature called Suitcase Swap
    •    Interesting travel news like hotel openings and launches
    •    Useful products and strategies for her practical travel advice column

An editor announced an exciting new contract role on LinkedIn. Hundreds of people congratulated her and filled her inbox with pitches.

But a few months later? The follow-ups have been nearly nonexistent.

That’s one of the things we can’t stop thinking about from this month’s Media Signals, from Pitchcraft founder @kbogletree. We’re also hearing journalists talk about how much a press trip’s guest list influences their decision to commit, and watching freelancers turn the expertise behind their bylines into entirely new businesses.

Then there’s Substack, a hot bed for hot takes. Writers are building loyal audiences there, but many say PR pros still aren’t pitching them for their newsletters. And on the food side, the wonderfully odd products getting attention this fall are a reminder that knowing a journalist’s personal taste can be just as useful as knowing their beat.

Swipe to learn five observations from the conversations we’re having inside Pitchcraft and what we’re seeing across lifestyle media, then leave a comment: Which one are you seeing in your corner of the industry?

A $500 assignment may sound reasonable—until it requires days of reporting and/or travel, multiple interviews, photography, social deliverables and several rounds of edits. That once-appealing figure quickly turns to pennies in the sea.

During a recent Pitchcraft conversation with @tim_herrera and @samanthajoleal about freelance rates, one reality became clear: The economics of independent journalism don’t affect writers alone. They also shape which pitches get pursued, which trips are feasible and what kinds of support help a story move forward.

This isn’t an argument that PR pros should influence (or subsidize) editorial coverage. It’s an invitation for both sides to better understand the conditions surrounding the work.

For journalists, this means becoming more comfortable discussing rates, scope and boundaries.

For PR pros, it entails making the reporting process easier through stronger targeting, clearer information, thoughtful access and realistic expectations.

What do you wish the other side better understood? 💜 by @joinpitchcraft

“The story is the human side of journalism. I like the counter-AI-ness of your business.”

Real human connection in a sea of AI slop. That’s the mantra we’re leaning into in 2026, and it resonated with judges in the Pepperdine Most Fundable Companies competition.

Out of 2,100 companies, we made it through two extensive written application rounds and three video interviews to make the top 80 companies on this prestigious list.

Though we didn’t come out on top this year, it was an incredible process to go through, filled with tremendous growth for us as business owners. In a program filled with niche AI-focused companies, we were up against steep competition.

@oglegrams and I did not dream of being tech founders. We ended up here discovering a problem and creating a way to address it, with the goal of helping PR pros and journalists across the country. The learning curve here has been filled with many lows, misunderstandings, missteps and frustrating moments. But through them all, we’ve gained experience and knowledge, and are excited to keep moving forward with this wind on our backs.

These two little kids have come a long way, baby, and we’re just getting started. Now tell us: What wild and crazy dream are you chasing right now? by @joinpitchcraft
