BENCH MINOR NY part3/

#1 Did you know that, for the first time and probably the last time, a tournament tried having mobile referees on the court? One on roller skates and the other on a BMX . The PIT is really wide; otherwise, it would have been a disaster...
@nycbikepoloclub

#2 Bench 1, Captain Ben Hunter talking strategy or maybe looking for a good restaurant for the evening. Great team here with legends like Captain Jake, Chris Simpson, Kev, Johny, Sam, Bainesworth...

#3 Bench 2, my team with Captain @joethelefty !

#4 Bench 3 with the red team and the Swiss legend Clement @uolmo

#5 Fiona from NY was the only Flinta selected by Captain @benwhunter !

#6 Bench 4, New York life... news, coffee, and bike polo.

Exactly 8 years ago on June 25th this sign was hung in anticipation of opening Lowry Hill Meats. Yesterday was its last day illuminating our shop. Much love to everyone, and thank you for all the support through the years & straight through til’ the end. Be well - eat well - and we’ll see y’all around ✌️

The Jenny Cup

Upon the passing of @kev_walsh, it seemed only right to retrieve this trophy because he was an active participant in most of these tournaments and was so impactful on the sport and especially in the Upper Midwest. A couple players brought it’s existence into question and I knew where it was, so I took the initiative and grabbed it. It’s surreal to have in my living room because I never won it but I have so many memories tied to it.

This trophy is important part of history for the Midwest bike polo scene. Made in Chicago by Lucky and compiled of various bits including a steel mixing bowl that belonged to Jenny Addison, to return the favor for sacrificing her bowl, the cup was giving the name “Jenny.”

For years this trophy was in contention between Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago bike polo clubs and was first played on grass as the Midwest was transitioning to hard court. The first two were on grass, the third was big ball on a concrete and by the 4th, the game was looking more reminiscent of today’s game (maybe a few more bruises and scabs).

A few people independently brought up that the Midwest Champeenships should be resurrected in Kev’s honor.
I don’t feel that I’m in a place to be the custodian of this artifact, so I’m posting this in the hopes of some older, more qualified players can guide what to do with this. It can’t live on a bike shop shelf anymore.

Love y’all,

We are excited to have writer, former farmer and chef Abra Berens as a participant in the upcoming FARM to FLAVOR event in Madison, WI on August 21 at @garverfeedmill which will celebrate organic plant breeding with 16 tasting tables focused on grains, vegetables, and nuts. {Tickets in bio | $25 early bird tickets end July 21}.

I love her two cookbooks which offer practical and straight forward info on cooking grains and vegetables.

"Grist: A Practical Guide to Cooking Grains, Beans, Seeds, and Legumes” is just that, practical. It breaks down 29 different types of grains and legumes with easy cooking techniques and over 300 recipe variations to make whole grains a part of your everyday repertoire.

"Ruffage: A Practical Guide to Vegetables" was Abra's first cookbook and is rooted in her experiences as a chef, former farmer, and everyday eater. It is a teaching cookbook that aims to help build reader’s confidence in preparing vegetables by providing easy-to-follow recipes, detailed explanation of cooking techniques, and a myriad of variations for each recipe to inspire future dishes.

Abra started cooking at the storied Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, MI. She then went on to train in the garden-focused kitchen at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Cork, Ireland. In 2009 she co-founded Bare Knuckle Farm in Northport, MI, where she farmed and cooked for 8 years. After years of farming, she returned to the kitchen full time, opening and helming the café at Local Foods in Chicago, IL. In 2017, she left her Executive Chef position to return to the mitten state to join the team at Granor Farm in Three Oaks, MI, where she combines her love of farms and restaurants to create one-of-a-kind dinners on the farm celebrating the best of South West Michigan’s diverse agriculture.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH APPLE SOUP adapted from @jonnydhunter and @hipfoodiemom1 - This soup is cooked using an electric pressure cooker. I vegetarianized the soup by using vegetable broth in place of chicken stock, date syrup in place of brown sugar and canned full fat unsweetened coconut milk in place of heavy cream. With these modifications, the soup is also gluten-free and vegan. I garnished the soup with roasted chickpeas in place of bacon. This soup is simple to make, healthy, creamy and delicious...and EVEN MORE DELICIOUS THE NEXT DAY!

Today I completed the Kortelopet classic cross country ski race.
It’s not the longest race of the event but it is the longest I’ve ever gone before. (29km / 18M)
I had a few people say “do you really think you can do that?”
I also had people say “you CAN do it.”
Thanks to my amazing wife, who always knew when to say “you can do it” or “ you don’t have to.” Thanks to @jonnydhunter and @floerkia for inviting us into you skiing family and thanks to @sammachino for always pushing me to be harder to kill! #crosscountryskiing #birkebeiner #strongerpeoplearehardertokill
