On Plants, Pleasure, and the Body Artist and researcher Marina Guzzo (@ninaguzzo) shares images from Mistura #10, taken by Edgard Berendsen. This iteration of an ongoing project took place as part of the series THE GROWING SESSIONS, in the frame of The Vegetable Parliament by @josemdelano. Evolving from an at-home experiment to an international performance workshop, Mistura is the embodiment of ecosomatic joy: through integrating plants with dress and dance, participants embrace a sense of oneness with body and land; women and plants become linked in reverential transformation. For Planted, Guzzo describes the project in the context of care, climate, and the erotic—the latter “not necessarily linked to sex or sexuality,” says Guzzo, but rather “an exercise in deepening relationships of affection, listening, satisfaction.” Mistura encourages an expanded understanding of being in the world, offering a form of resistance to the Anthropocene and our misaligned relationship with abundance. Thank you, good bye and hopefully till the next time! For the time being, after 1,5 years, we are saying goodbye to the Image Collection on the History of Astrology and Astronomy by Aby Warburg made in collaboration with Gertrud Bing and Fritz Saxl at the @planetariumhamburg.  We are currently working on the possibility, as per Warburg’s wish, for the show to stay at the Planetarium Hamburg or elsewhere in the city of Hamburg for a longer time from 2028. The Image collections is the only exhibition that the prolific Jewish-German made in his lifetime. We believe that his vision how to read the sky, how to engage with the migration of images and meanings, how to live beyond „grenzpolizeiliche Befangenheit“ or how to practice the concept of “Nachleben” is visionary, timely and more and more relevant in our times.  Thank you to all the guests from far and near, all the collaborators, all the Warburgians of the world, it was such a pleasure to exchange and learn from you. From the Cosmos to the Commons is closing and we’re filled with gratitude for all of you who visited the exhibition at the @mahnmalst.nikolai this summer! Thank you to old and new friends, to tourists and bypassers alike, for joining us on guided tours, performances, conversations, carillon concerts and movie screenings, for your curiosity and energy! It was truly amazing to have the chance to exhibit art in public in this very special place. Join our for the time being last walk through the Image Collection on the History of Astrology and Astronomy by Aby Warburg in Collaboration with Gertrud Bing and Fritz Saxl at the @planetariumhamburg on Tuesday, 22.9. at 17:00 with the City Curator Joanna Warsza [@jowa_hkhk] and the curator Prof. Uwe Fleckner. City Curator Hamburg presents the only exhibition ever personally made by Aby Warburg, Gertrud Bing and Fritz Saxl for the Planetarium. Its contents were long considered lost and were rediscovered only in the late 1980s. Saodat Ismailova, Melted into the Sun, 2024/2026 The exhibition / die Ausstellung  FIRE. From the Cosmos to the Commons  at the / am @mahnmalst.nikolai in Hamburg 21.6.-21.9.2026 curated by City Curator Hamburg / kuratiert von Stadtkuratorin Joanna Warsza [@jowa_hkhk], Exhibition architecture / Ausstellungsarchitektur: José Délano [@josemdelano]. The work by the Uzbek artist Saodat Ismailova [@saodatismailova], film and the new site-specific installation turn around the Central Asian history of Zoorotastrianism and the worship of the Sun that have been practiced there for many centuries. The film centers on an alchemist and a prophet al-Muqanna, who lived in the 8th century. It moves across time and space linked to al-Muqanna’s legend – from the prehistoric period, through the Islamic era, the Soviet Uzbek engineering up to the contemporary hyper capitalist times. The related installation on the memorial tower references the game of mirrors, that  al-Muqanna used to practice with hundreds of people building an arch from the cosmos to the commons. Even if for us humans, the sun might seem timeless, it will explode one day. Will we be ever able, before that, to build a fair, planetary society? – Die Arbeit der usbekischen Künstlerin Saodat Ismailova, der Film und die neue ortsspezifische Installation, kreisen um die zentralasiatische Geschichte des Zoroastrismus und der Sonnenverehrung, die dort über viele Jahrhunderte hinweg praktiziert wurden.  Sie folgt der legendären Figur al-Muqanna, der im 8. Jh. in Zentralasien als Alchemist und Prophet lebte. Verknüpft durch die Legende des al-Muqanna, bewegt sich der Film durch Zeit und Raum. Er durchquert die Vorgeschichte, die islamische Epoche, die sowjetisch-usbekische Ingenieurskunst und schließlich die gegenwärtige hyperkaptialistische Zeit. Die dazugehörige Installation am Turm nimmt Bezug auf ein Spiegelspiel, das Al-Muqanna mit Hunderten von Menschen inszenierte und dabei einen Bogen vom Kosmos zur Gemeinschaft spannte. Auch wenn die Sonne uns Menschen als konstant erscheinen mag, wird sie eines Tages explodieren. Werden wir bis dahin jemals in der Lage sein, eine gerechte, planetare Gesellschaft zu errichten?

The new site specific artwork by the Uzbek artist Saodat Ismailova  [@saodatismailova] and her related film engage with a solar imaginary shaped by myth, time, ideology, history, catastrophe, and ecology. The mirror becomes a complex symbol: it reflects the human desire for both relation and idealization, but also possession, and destruction. One of the world’s largest solar furnaces, located near Tashkent, also consists of millions of small mirrors arranged to capture and concentrate sunlight. Today, we count on the Sun a more sustainable future. The Sun is generous, it “gives without receiving”, yet one day it too will cease to exist. Before that moment arrives, can humanity build a world of solarity – a fairer and more planetary society? – Die neue ortsspezifische Arbeit von der usbekischen Künstlerin Saodat Ismailova, sowie der dazugehörige Film, setzt sich mit einer solaren Vorstellungswelt auseinander, die von Mythos, Zeit, Ideologie, Geschichte, Katastrophe und Ökologie geprägt ist. Der Spiegel wird dabei zu einem vielschichtigen Symbol: Er spiegelt das menschliche Verlangen nach Beziehung und Idealisierung wieder, aber auch nach Besitz und Zerstörung. Einer der größten Solarschmelzöfen der Welt, der sich in der Nähe von Taschkent befindet, besteht ebenfalls aus Millionen kleiner Spiegel, die so angeordnet sind, dass sie das Sonnenlicht einfangen und bündeln. Heute setzen wir auf die Sonne als Hoffnungsträgerin für eine nachhaltigere Zukunft. Die Sonne ist großzügig, sie „gibt, ohne etwas zurückzuerhalten“, und doch wird auch sie eines Tages aufhören zu existieren. Bevor dieser Moment eintritt, stellt sich die Frage, ob die Menschheit eine Welt der „Solarität“ erschaffen kann, eine gerechtere und stärker auf den gesamten Planeten ausgerichtete Gesellschaft. One month to go - here is a wrap up film of the exhibition FIRE, the second chapter in the City Curator series From the Cosmos to the Commons: Five Year–Five Elements. The series focuses on the elemental forces of Cosmos (2025), Fire (2026), Earth (2027), Air (2028), and Water (2029), dedicating one year to each. Together, they invite us to look toward the horizon of a planetary public sphere, a life with and not against the planet, guided by a sense of the „not-yet“, a felt awareness of what might emerge. — FIRE-Ausstellung, der zweite Kapitel der Reihe der Stadtkuratorin Hamburg From the Cosmos to the Commons: Fünf Jahre – Fünf Elemente, ist noch einen Monat lang zu sehen und unser Ausstellungsfilm ist nun auch verfügbar. Agnes Denes‘ Manifesto 1969 and the Sunflower Field at the Hammaburg-Platz. Agnes Denes, born in 1931 in Budapest, living in NYC, is a legendary feminist artist who introduced an idea of environmental art, art that produces oxygen with her Wheatfield in Manhattan (1984). Her new commission, Sunflower Fields, returns for 5 years in a different area of Hamburg. After last year’s edition at the Stadtpark Hamburg, the second field came to where the city started, as an act of regeneration without gentrification, a gesture to rethink our relation to the planet, city development, climate change, speculation and unpredictability of urban life. While the plants have already reached the end of their life cycle due to the extreme heat waves, you can still encounter Agnes’ Manifesto while visiting the square, till 21 September. The relations the field created live on. – Manifesto 1969 und Sunflower Field von Agnes Denes am Hammaburg-Platz. Agnes Denes, geb. 1931 in Budapest, lebt in New York City, ist eine legendäre feministische Künstlerin, die mit ihrem Werk Wheatfield in Manhattan (1984) das Konzept der Environmental Art geprägt hat. Ihr neues Projekt Sunflower Fields kehrt jährlich über fünf Jahre an einen anderen Ort in Hamburg zurück. Nach der letztjährigen Ausgabe im Stadtpark entstand das zweite Feld dort, wo die Stadt ihren Ursprung hat – als Akt der Regeneration ohne Gentrifizierung, als Geste, um unser Verhältnis zum Planeten, zur Stadtentwicklung, zum Klimawandel und zur Unvorhersehbarkeit des urbanen Lebens zu überdenken. Während die Sonnenblumen in diesem Jahr aufgrund der extremen Hitzewelle deutlich schneller das Ende ihres Lebenszyklus erreicht haben, ist Agnes’ Manifesto noch bis zum 21. Join us for the outdoor film screening at the @mahnmalst.nikolai on Friday, 21.8. at 21:00! The film Cinzas da Floresta (The Ashes of the Forest), produced by André D’Elia [@cinedelia], follows the artist Mundano [@mundano_sp] as he travels throughout Brazil collecting ashes from forest fires. These ashes are used to create large murals in different cities to draw attention to the fires and the vital role played by volunteer firefighters in fighting them. Ashes from the Amazon region, which were passed on to City Curator Hamburg by Mundano’s collective Cinzas da Floresta [@cinzasdafloresta] in São Paulo, were used to create the mural Tara’s Tears by Cecilia Vicuña [@ceciliavicuna] and Coco Bergholm [@cocobergholm], which is on display at the St. Nikolai Memorial as part of the FIRE exhibition. – Herzliche Einladung zum Freiluftkino am Mahnmal St. Nikolai am Freitag, dem 21.8. um 21:00 Uhr! Der Film Cinzas da Floresta (Die Asche des Waldes), produziert von André D’Elia, folgt dem Künstler Mundano, der in ganz Brasilien nach Waldbränden die Asche sammelt.
