In October 2016, I wrote an opinion editorial titled “Why You Should Not Visit South Africa,” a scathing rebuke of the country’s visa policies toward Nigerians. While I wrote the essay with Nigerians in mind, it resonated far beyond Nigeria, amplifying frustrations shared by other Africans who had experienced similar hurdles. I soon found myself at the center of a heated, often divisive, debate about relations between South Africans and the rest of the continent. As someone who had made a deliberate effort to tell positive and uplifting stories about Africa and Africans, this was off brand. After almost a decade of talks, debates and some much needed reforms, I returned to South Africa. Since the original article published in the @guardiannigeria garnered so much attention, I returned to my old shop to write an updated piece “Why I returned to South Africa after almost a decade: A reflection on progress, diplomacy, and African unity”. I know bad news travels much faster than COVID while good news barely gets acknowledged, but please give this a read, comment and share s’il vous plait! Link in bio!

For the love of Art and Lagos💚🇳🇬 We returned to Lagos, Nigeria for the 3rd visit to the 9th edition of the international art fair in West Africa, and a dynamic platform created to showcase and support contemporary culture from Africa and its diaspora. This tour experience has been a collaboration between @soultravellertours and @capitalartofficial. An expression of our collective vision to curate art inspired travel experiences on the continent. Lagos feels like a jolt of electricity and a feast for the creative soul! It heightens your sensitivities, leaving you feeling, overwhelmed, exhilarated, surprised, emotional and energised. We attended the Collectors Preview and it felt like a home coming to familiar faces. From meeting the artists, collectors and people watching the creative social scene, pure marvel. Lagosians are warm and gracious hosts. They opened their homes, galleries and artists studios for us to wander and take it all in. We could barely keep up with the invitations to attend garden parties, cocktail events or a home cooked meals with a glass of wine to decompress. To paraphrase @ben_enwonwu - ‘the purpose of art is the invoke human emotion through its expression so we can sympathise with each other’ - well, travel does the same. This trip felt like a warm hug of faith and hope for our continent and the many people doing their part to@connect us. Thank you @artxlagos for an incredible experience and the opportunity to immerse ourselves in rich history, heritage and culture of Nigeria through art. This is #impacttravel #travelafriva Next trip is Marrakesh @154artfair in January. #letsgo ❤️

Community, to me, means people who show up for you and rally behind you with unwavering support.

Over the past two weeks, during the DLO African Women in Leadership Summit, I was reminded of the powerful community I’ve had the privilege of building over the years through this platform.

This year, we did something a little different — we hosted a brunch and a series of panel discussions centered on strengthening ecosystems around creative entrepreneurship.

Too often, when we discuss funding in Africa, the focus is limited to infrastructure and technology. Yet, the creative sector is a major contributor to our economies across the continent, and it continues to be underfunded and overlooked.

What we achieved last week was special: we brought traditional funders like @myaccessbank @accessbanksa into the room with visionaries and trailblazers from the creative world. We also had the privilege of hosting speakers from across the globe — the USA, Europe, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Cameroon, Botswana, and Zambia — each bringing rich perspectives and valuable insights.

I’ll admit — I was nervous about how it would all unfold. But the depth of the conversations, the level of engagement, and the shared commitment to real change far exceeded anything I could have imagined.

Thank you to my community — for showing up for me, for standing with this mission, and most importantly, for holding space for such a vital conversation.
