It's that time of the year! Help us welcome some of our 2026 Young Guns Artists🎉

Amy Brakeman Livezey is a Helena, Montana-based mixed media painter whose work is inspired by the history and landscape of the American West. Originally trained in filmmaking, she turned to painting after settling in Montana in 1993. The Rocky Mountain West has deeply shaped her artistic vision, and she is known for evocative interpretations of historic Western subjects. The historic roles of women are a particular focus of Livezey’s work. She transforms vintage photographic references into contemporary paintings that balance abstraction with recognizable imagery. Working with acrylic paint, photo transfers, ephemera, and subtractive mark-making, she builds richly layered surfaces that evoke the passage of time and the enduring relevance of her subjects.

Primarily a self taught painter, Katelyn began studying oils following the move to a rural town in the wild and vast Chihuahuan desert, where the desert light and shadow ignited curiosity and awe. Mainly a western figurative & landscape painter, Betsill believes in painting what is familiar to her, featuring western landscapes and figures that reflect her own experiences working in, and with, the land. "My paintings depict the life that flourishes within the harsh and brilliant environment of high desert climates. My paintings are often landscapes, but through my choice of subject and context, I hope to invite the viewer to consider the beauty and complexity of what I see as a 'land of opposites' which have learned to coexist. Delicacy and hardiness. Sun and Moon. Light and shadow. Drought and rain. With every piece I hope to create a portrait of balance in a ferocious and hypnotizing place."

Made a quick trip to Alpine to see the Texas Trappings show at the @museumofthebigbend where we caught up with several artist friends and met some new ones! We stopped in at the V6 Gallery at the @gageresort where I have some of my work and enjoyed a drink and a bite to eat at the White Buffalo Bar. If you’ve never stayed at the Gage, I highly encourage a visit - as I do a visit to Alpine! We thoroughly enjoyed the opening events, demos and beautiful art! Ironically we finally met a fellow Christoval resident, @wilsoncapron whose silversmithing work is truly breathtaking! We also found some time to check out some of our favorite shops in Alpine - @front_street_books and Cheshire Cat Antiques where I spotted this great vintage fringed suede jacket, and yes, I did bring it home with me! 😉 The exhibition is up for several more weeks and there are still some amazing pieces to be had you can view online! My friend @colleen_obrien also has a show there as well showcasing her environmentally themed work from @bigbendnps! #debbiecarrollfineart #thegage #marathon #alpine #museumofthebigbend

I hope one day the next generation will look back on this and be proud of how hard we fought for something so special. And I hope when that day comes it’s because they’re canoeing down the Rio Grande unencumbered and witnessing its magic with their own eyes.

It’s emotional watching Texans across the aisle and of all ages come together to advocate for our beloved Big Bend.
