On Friday evening, we joined Kansas City Parks and Recreation and Roanoke Park Conservancy to commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Roanoke Park! SWT Design is proud to have supported them by providing the vision and design intent for the park's recent improvements. New walkways, water play, a hillside slide, and a bat-friendly cave gate, are among the new updates the community can enjoy. The celebration continued with Kansas City Parks and Recreation's 2nd annual Ghouls Night Out event, where guests joined in on Halloween activities together. Thanks to all who came out to celebrate a great night!

Look closely along the Tiger Trail at the @kansascityzoo and you’ll find a bronze lion cub with a story behind it. The Harry Evans Minty Memorial Fountain was created in memory of a former Park Board member, with the sculpture modeled after Tyke, one of his favorite Zoo animals. The fountain once stood near the African Veldt before being moved to its current location. Visiting the Zoo this October? Look for this small piece of Kansas City history along the Tiger Trail. Visit the COFF website for more of the story and additional photos. 🦁LINK IN BIO * * * #VisitKC #Fountains #CityofFountains #SwopePark #HistoricKC #KansasCityZoo

@kcmoparks @mayorqlucas 🛼✨ KANSAS CITY HAS A BRAND-NEW OUTDOOR ROLLER SKATING RINK… AND YOU KNOW I HAD TO CHECK IT OUT! 💃❤️ We headed down to the newly renovated Blues Park near 18th & Vine, and what a fantastic addition to Kansas City! Here’s what makes this new skating destination so exciting: 📍 Location: 20th Street & Prospect Avenue, Kansas City, MO 🛼 16,000-square-foot outdoor roller skating rink! 💰 Part of a $1.7 million investment into revitalizing the park and bringing something special to the community. 🚻 New restrooms and a parking lot! 🎧 Local skating groups helped celebrate the grand opening and even provided free skates to kids! 🌃 Park hours: 5 AM to midnight, daily! I absolutely LOVE seeing Kansas City invest in places that bring people together, encourage movement, and create opportunities for people of all ages to get outside and have fun 🤩 Life is too short to sit on the sidelines. Put on those skates and enjoy the ride! 🛼✨ #AmyHairKC #KansasCity #BluesPark #RollerSkating #ForeverYoung

The National Park Service has awarded $20,000 to the City of Kansas City, Missouri, to prepare a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Swope Park Swimming Pool Complex. The award, announced September 29th, is part of $1.25 million in federal Underrepresented Communities Grants supporting 18 projects across 15 states. Funded through the Historic Preservation Fund, this program supports recognition of historic places associated with underrepresented communities. Constructed in 1942 as a centerpiece of the Kansas City Parks System's largest park, the pool later became a site of the city's civil rights struggle over desegregation of public facilities. Built with Works Progress Administration (WPA) funding at a cost of roughly $400,000, the concrete swimming complex ranked among the region's largest municipal pools. Designed by Marshall and Brown, with landscape design by Hare and Hare, it featured concrete decks, substantial bathhouses, and landscaped surroundings. Its low-profile brick and stone buildings employed streamlined surfaces and limited decoration consistent with Moderne styling of WPA-era public facilities. Despite public funding, the pool operated as a whites-only facility. In 1951, six African American residents were denied admission, prompting a federal lawsuit by the Kansas City branch of the NAACP. Judge Albert A. Ridge ruled against the City's segregation policy in 1952, but Kansas City closed the pool for the 1952 and 1953 seasons rather than immediately integrate it. The facility reopened on an integrated basis in 1954. The complex is recognized on Kansas City's African American Heritage Trail. The pool has remained closed since 2019, following flooding and maintenance concerns. In August 2023, City Council adopted Resolution 230708, directing a funding strategy for preservation and restoration. In July 2025, KMBC 9 reported City estimates of $23 million to $27 million for rehabilitation and floodplain improvements, with an alternative outdoor pool at Southeast Community Center also contemplated. The NPS-funded National Register nomination may open additional pathways to preservation grants and rehabilitation assistance.
