The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts @cmcarts_inc, Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, is pleased to present the group exhibition SILA / DEMSELF / AGBETEGBÉE / EFTERLIV, the most expansive showcase to date of the group Reparative Encounters, featuring work by: Dorothy Amenuke @dotamenuke Julie Edel Hardenberg @julieedelhardenberg La Vaughn Belle @lavaughnbelle Bernard Akoi-Jackson @benjoonam and Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld @katrine_dirckinckholmfeld in co-curation with Daniela Agostinho @danielapagostinho Reparative Encounters is a network of artists and curators from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Ghana and Denmark, all locations differently impacted by Danish colonialism. Central to the work of the network is the idea that colonialism separates and alienates, creating ruptures that remain to be repaired. By working alongside each other, the network foregrounds artistic collaboration and solidarity between these regions as key to repairing colonial separation. The exhibition title combines the words SILA (Inuit concept denoting the physical world and its climate, and a spiritual wisdom of living in that world and climate, shared across generations); DEMSELF (the reflexive form of dey, the third-person singular personal pronoun in creole languages, signifying the plurality of being); AGBETEGBÉE (in Ewe language suggests eternal life, or life, forever); and EFTERLIV (which in Danish refers to the afterlife but also echo of a past event or condition). An opening program with artist presentations, performances and screenings will take place during the weekend of November 21-22. The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of Nordic Culture Fund, Carlsberg Foundation, Ny Carlsberg Foundation, Danish Arts Foundation, Aarhus University, the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC.

Our Reconciliation and Transitional Justice class spent time with the luminescent artwork of La Vaughn Belle to consider the legacies of colonialism in the Caribbean. Grateful for this tremendous resource at our Pace University Art Gallery and the support of the Mellon Foundation.

Have you stopped to look closely? 👀 This summer, three white buildings with pitched roofs appeared on the Rollins College campus. Look closely, and you’ll discover that this art installation by La Vaughn Belle holds deep historical meaning. Belle’s The House That Freedoms Built explores the history and legacy of colonialism in the Caribbean, particularly in her home of St. Croix. The delicate fretwork patterns that shape the structures reflect the enduring fragility of freedom. 👀 View the artwork 📖 Read the label 🎧 Listen to the Audio Guide Then, prepare your questions for an Artist Talk with La Vaughn Belle, Thomas P. Don’t miss this final opportunity to engage with Belle’s powerful exploration of history, memory, place, and resilience. “I make work about fragile things, like memory and history and what it means to be human in spaces like the one I was born into: an island space, a Black space, a colonized space,” Belle says. “A space teeming with the beauty of tropical splendor and soaked in the violence of colonial ruin.” This exhibition and the preceding artist residency are part of Pace University’s Islands, Archipelagos, and Cultural Ecologies project, funded by the Mellon Foundation, which brings together interdisciplinary studies of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, and New York City’s 42 islands. 📸: Adam Reich @paceuniversity @lavaughnbelle @paceuniversityartgallery @mellongrant.pace @dysoncollege #islands #nycartgallery #contemporaryart

AVAILABLE NOW: Volume 08: Crossing the Horizon 🔗 Order your copy through the link in bio. ___ Guest edited by Deja Aaliyah Belardo (@dejabelardo) 🇻🇮, Volume 08 brings together over twenty artists from across the Caribbean who engage the horizon not as a backdrop or a border, but as a threshold. Their work pushes back against the long-standing expectation that Caribbean art must be figurative, narrative, or ethnographic to be legible. Instead, it opens a speculative zone where memory drifts, ancestral knowledge surfaces, and alternative futures take shape. In this collision of reality and fantasy, these artists honor the past, confront the present, and reach toward what lies just past the line where sea meets sky. ARTIST TALK TODAY We are pleased to invite you to the artist talk Fragments and Silences with Virgin Islands-based artist La Vaughn Belle Wednesday, 7 October 2026 17:00 – 18:30 2112 Holbergsgade 20 Copenhagen How do we remember histories that have been erased, fragmented, or deliberately forgotten? In this artist talk, La Vaughn Belle discusses her artistic practice and her two works in Beyond Tropaganda: Trading Post (2015) and Storm (2020–22). Working across installation, photography, painting, video, writing, and public interventions, Belle explores how images, objects, and landscapes hold multiple temporalities, bringing fragments of history, memory, and lived experience into new relationships. Following Belle’s presentation, she will be joined in conversation by the curators of Beyond Tropaganda, art historian Mathias Danbolt and artist Jeannette Ehlers, to discuss how art can challenge colonial histories and shape public memory. The conversation will also offer an update on Belle and Ehlers’ ongoing collaborative project, I Am Queen Mary (2018–), the landmark monument in Copenhagen commemorating resistance to Danish colonialism in the former Danish West Indies. Beyond Tropaganda is developed in direct dialogue with Mathias Danbolt’s newly published book Tropaganda: Kunst, kolonialisme og kampe om historien and brings together a group of artists whose practices critically engage with the legacies of colonialism connecting Denmark, Kalaallit Nunaat, the US Virgin Islands, Ghana, and wider colonial geographies. The exhibition’s performance and talks programme is generously supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Danish Arts Foundation. The exhibition is on view through 17 October 2026. We hope to see you! Portrait of La Vaughn Belle by Stephanie Chalana Brown Installation view by Sofus Graae
