Invisible Dogs - Kiah Thomas and Jake A Minton

Have you ever had an imaginary friend? How about an imaginary dog? This is the story of Charlie, one little girl’s invisible dog. Her apartment is small, but an invisible dog can fit! With a heartwarming ending, I didn’t expect to get a tad emotional over this one, but in the best way.

The illustrations in Invisible Dogs are brilliant, and I love the little Easter eggs as a nod to Jake’s ‘Two Turtles’, which is still in heavy rotation at our house! Thanks to Little Book Press for this wonderful book.

Been down at @readingskids this morning in Carlton setting up a window display with @alyson_obrien and @sashabeekman of @littlebookpress fame for @kiahthomas and mines new book. Go check it out in the flesh!! It’s hard to photograph with all the window reflections but it looks lovely in person.

Chosen for National Simultaneous Storytime 2026, LUNA ROO THE KANGAROO BALLER delivers a high energy story that will have you cheering like you’re in the stands.

Rookie Captain LUNA ROO leaves nothing on the pitch as she steps up to lead FC Outback in a thrilling face-off against Bush United.

A story that is heartwarming and gives an empowering message that grit, courage, determination, and teamwork are a winning combination.

TRICKSHOT HARRI THE CHEETAH WORLD BEATER is yet another great picture book for young readers in the Animal World Cup Series.

Harri is an exceptionally talented star cheetah playing soccer for Jungle FC. He scores four goals in the first half against the tough Safari Stars, believing he can win the entire match alone but when his father reminds him that there is “no I in team,” Harri laughs it off.

An engaging and positive story with a message about sharing, collaboration, and realizing that a true champion relies on everyone just not themselves.

Both books are very entertaining and illustrations by @jakemintonillustration are vibrant and bold catching the excitement of the game. Eye catching to all who love sport, animals, competition and especially soccer.

My potential children’s picture book ‘Where’s Will’ works on many levels for children and families.

1) It can be read simply as a funny and relatable story about an adorable kookaburra who’s holding back and playing small in the forest choir.

2) It works also as a chance for the adults reading it aloud to let go of their OWN inhibitions and be utterly silly trying to do the bird calls.
They get to role model ‘having a crack’ without trying to get it perfect.

💫 But does the underlying theme resonate with where YOU’RE at in your life right now❓

🌟No more hiding
🌟No more playing small or holding back
🌟It’s your time to shine
🌟 The world needs your ‘voice’ / creativity

Australian author and illustrator Tegan Moss has a fantastic story about how she got her start in children’s publishing.

Tegan put one of her illustrations on Instagram.

A publisher saw it.

They contacted her and asked if she’d like to create a picture book for Little Book Press.

And Nora Notices was born!

Tegan joins us to talk about that amazing first opportunity and everything she’s learned since.
From finding her feet as an author and illustrator to understanding the process of creating books for children.

INVISIBLE DOGS cover process.
@littlebookpress @kiahthomas

First pass was pretty close but our girls expression was just a bit too much.

Tried this sweeter, softer pose which I like but it didn’t quite capture the fun vibe of the story.

Eased up the expression and there she is.

Colour rough in procreate. I decided I wanted the grass to be more blue though as I want that green to come in later in the story to represent something.

Transferred the line drawing onto watercolour paper with a light box and coloured pencils then got to painting.

Adding little details now with coloured pencil.

Taking off that tape which is so satisfying.

I then drew Charlie in procreate so we could have it on a separate layer and use a lovely orange Pantone to really make the good boy pop. Played with a few fonts but nothing was working.

So just hand drew the type like I did with Two Turtles. Getting there.

Wobbley warped it a bit to fit the space better and make it more playful and voila! The final cover.

What we liked about FINDING MY CULTURE:
* Firstly, what a powerful story about being given the opportunity to learn about oneself on your own terms.
* Secondly, we love to see community and Country at the forefront, and how they helped to bring a sense of understanding and a depth of belonging that had not been experienced before.
* Finally, Thomas’s illustrative style was captivating. We were enchanted by the realism and the colour scheme.

🤫 Dear children’s writers and illustrators, do you need complete solitude and quiet to work?

Here I am at the recent @sketchandscribefest Coach Camp, an incredible opportunity where we received face-to-face feedback from the wonderful Alyson O’Brien @littlebookpress.

There were six tables of 5, each working with a different publisher.

We then had one hour to start making some of the changes she suggested, before resubmitting.

There’s no way I’d be able to get anything done in a room full of people, so I took myself outside and found a spot out of the wind.

❓How solitary and quiet do YOU need to be when writing❓How do you achieve that? Your writing tips are valued by all of us here. 🙏

❓Children’s illustrators - how about you?

❓Or please share if your life situation dictates otherwise! 😂
