this piece means a lot to me. thank you to each cast member for collaborating with me, this work was made directly from you, & I’ll always be thankful for your trust & vulnerability. you didn’t have to share what you did in rehearsals, but you each made the choice to be brave & to be honest, & i admire each of you for it. i felt alone for a long time, but you each reminded me every rehearsal how much i belong. for that, and for countless other things, thank you 🌻✨

thank you @olvrlim for running that exercise in my living room, it was so beautiful & fun. thank you for letting me pick your brain as i prepped for this, your insights were so helpful. thank you for that lighting cue too <3

thank you @leungaudreycherry for showing up to our first few rehearsals to help, your openness encouraged us all. thank you for the gifts you gave us for the show, your generosity & thoughtfulness are always noticed & appreciated.

thank you @aeriecarter for letting us into your apartment complex & studio, that space was so perfect for our improv day, as was your warmth & silliness!!

thank you @johnluugumes for letting us steal your boardgames & mario kart to use <33

thank you @johnluugumes & @marissar22 for letting us take over the living room & downstairs so many times.

thank you @thebitingschool & @olvrlim for the rehearsal spaces, both were so perfect.

thank you @victorlauu for writing me & the other captains a blank cheque to make whatever we wanted. in life, it is extremely rare that you are given so much trust, thank you for giving this to us.

thank you @jullianvsco for filming & editing, your work always amazes me.

thank you @jason.amit for initially being in this piece, even though you weren’t able to be with us, you will always be a part of the vision.

^^it takes a village. i have such a great one :’)

We are 5 days away from show day. I know this week will get increasingly chaotic as the show gets closer.

While I have the time and the energy, I wanted to make a post about the process of making my piece for the UNKNOWN show (this saturday heyyyyy!).

I won’t spoil anything, but my goal for this process (not the piece!) was to build a new way of building a routine for myself. I was so so inspired & quite honestly changed for the better from my experience working on Magical Garden (directed by @olvrlim ). I wanted to recreate the experience I had, but in a more choreo-specific context.

Magical Garden was a contemporary performance art piece, and was about 20mins of structured improv, and I knew this piece for UNKNOWN would be 4mins max of some form of choreography.

Obviously, those are two very different kinds of performances. I wanted to find where the middle ground lived between them. Up until this point, I had a set way of putting together a routine that was very type A of me. I wanted to create a new mode of creation with this piece, that felt similar to my work with Oli & the rest of his cast. I wanted a mode of creation that was born from the real experiences and feelings of the people in the cast. I wanted a mode of creation that felt more collaborative & connecting. I wanted a mode of creation that left room for uncertainty, and to allow movement & ideas to flow more freely. I wanted the EXPERIENCE of creating to inform the PRODUCT we created.

I picked this cast very intentionally. I want to keep some things special, just for us, but what I will share is that my cast is filled with people who feel deeply, and who can empathize deeply. I have been so blessed, they have been the most amazing collaborators & cast members. This piece does not belong to me, it belongs to US. This piece would be entirely different if even one cast member was different. All of the choreo was built with them in some capacity. Living in uncertainty for this piece, seeing a poster w my name on it before we even set anything officially, was a little stressful sometimes, yes! But I had faith in our little collective, and BOY DID WE PULL THROUGH.
