Letter Studio: Modular

This project explores how a typeface can be generated through a single design system. The circle, a shape that holds deep personal meaning, was used as the structural foundation. Within that single circle, all possible letterform variations were explored.

Each character was then refined and studied to ensure visual harmony across the typeface. Through this interactive process, a complete and unified typeface was created.

Olhares empáticos dispostos a fazer você crescer.

Tathi Marceli

What started as an exercise in @mchaccur class at @kabkdesign in 2020 and collected dust in my drawer for a few years has become a full type family in 18 styles.

Massive thanks to @matdesjardins and Francesca Bolognini for trusting and guiding me through this project 🫶

And a big big shoutout to @sergiolairisa & @nabill for creating these insane visuals and making my letters look so juicy 😮‍💨

☀️Mega start to the year with two project weeks dedicated to Graphic Design and Fieldwork & Research ☀️

Week one: “Tools to Dismantle the Masters House?”* we will be reflecting on the conscious designer’s toolkit.

Through 7 different workshops we will inspect our tools and take a critical look at the software, hardware, resources, materials and industries that make all of our work possible. What is the carbon footprint of our profession? and how can we find alternatives to unsustainable dependencies?

The 7 workshops are a collaboration between tutors of the Graphic Design Department and special external guests. We are so lucky to have such an awesome lineup!

#1 Drawing, let the mechanism breathe and speak!
By Rob Bothof (creative coder), Saber Javanmard (GD alumni) and Pascal de Man (coding 2)

#2 Skills for Assembly: Poster-Making on the Letterpress
Sanne Beeren (letterpress), Phil Baber (Typ3) Johanna Ehde, Elisabeth Rafstedt (Typ2)

#3 Animated typography on the architectural grid
Daniel Maarleveld (designer) Jakob Schlotter (IMD3)

#4 Thinking with your hands
Lupi Ascensio (designer), Na Kim (designer) and Marina Chaccur (Letterstudio)

#5 The Group Show
Jaring Dürst Britt (curator and gallerist), Pjotr de Jong (Design Practice) and Bart de Baets (Graphic Design 1)

#6 From the Get-Go: Chance as Tool
Harmen Liemburg (screenprinter) and Richard Niessen (GD3)

#7 Character cyber-personas (ditching Silicone Valley)
James Graves (co-founder Hackers and Designers) and Kees van Drongelen (Hacklab)

*inspired by: “THE MASTER’S TOOLS WILL NEVER DISMANTLE THE MASTER’S HOUSE”, (1984) Audre Lorde speaks about the unrecognized racism which existed within feminist work at the time. She questions if it is possible to create change within existing, dominant paradigms.
