There are hundreds of thousands of members in withdrawal-related support groups and that figure does not include the countless individuals who never formally joined these communities or those who suffered in isolation, never finding them at all.

It is a profound failure that drug manufacturers and regulators did not adequately warn patients—people who simply trusted their doctors—about the possibility of severe, life-altering withdrawal and the need for careful, often years-long tapering. For many long-term users, tapering is not a passive process. It requires measuring tiny amounts of medication—crumbs, beads, or drops—with extraordinary precision to avoid debilitating symptoms.

In the absence of meaningful medical guidance, patients have become the experts, creating makeshift laboratories in their kitchens and developing tapering methods through necessity and lived experience. Attempts to dismiss these experiences as mere anecdote, or to discredit patients’ accounts of their own bodies and minds because they carry a psychiatric diagnosis, are fundamentally anti-patient. Those most affected by these drugs deserve to be heard, not silenced.

@angiepeacockmsw is one of the five people the documentary follows, and she explained to me that the experience saved her life.

I never told you..

When I was going through suspected serotonergic toxicity,

What happened next?

I was threatened, discredited, reported to @cpsbc_ca and “fired” (fortunately I had resigned from being a Clinical Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics in 2020).

The @cpsbc_ca letters kept coming, Island Health kept threatening and a “non profit” (BCSS) sent a legal letter.

There must be an extraordinary amount of revenue and profit from the addiction firestorm that society finds itself in. The Panorama Program 1 833 EXP CONN, The Janssen Journey, and the INITIATE drug trial for the Health Authority to be so keen on force injecting 4400 patients with depot Abilify Maintena for a year.

So who is receiving all the Otsuka Lundbeck kickbacks, free product, usual honorariums and “clinical research” $$$$?

Why are nurse practitioners diagnosing, prescribing sand injecting depot drugs that even GP’s would never prescribe?

Who will help patients safely taper off these forced depot injections?

Do the police on ACT/ACSS teams and “wellness checks” understand that Otsuka is paying the Health Authority?
@vicpdcanada the drug companies pay Alio Health Homecare and health authorities to boost the distribution of their pharmaceutical products and long term use as dependence is created or they are dead. Does the @bccoroner understand?

As a mother, when I turned to the RJH, our local health authority, to seek support for my son, I had absolutely no idea of the grief that I would endure, the strain on my family, and the ongoing threats and attacks on my credentials, character and experience.

As a well regarded and experienced anesthesiologist, I assumed I would have a say in my son’s care. None of that happened. He was tremendously hurt and iatrogenically harmed by every single individual involved in his “care”.

Understanding the system, I went through the usual channels of reporting to QA, patient care quality office, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and of course, There are thousands of stories on @facebook under PES and there is no desire to change or make an effort to change despite terrible patient outcomes.

Angela Peacock, MSW, CPC is a U.S. Army veteran, psychiatric drug withdrawal consultant, and healing coach. After surviving overmedication and polypharmacy following her military service, she now educates individuals, families, and organizations on harm reduction and safe deprescribing of psychiatric medications. Her story is featured in the award-winning documentary Medicating Normal (2020), which explores the risks of long-term psychiatric drug use and the challenges of deprescribing.

Angela’s advocacy has included serving as a Legislative Policy Fellow for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Veteran Liaison for the Benzodiazepine Information Coalition, team member at The Withdrawal Project, and Social Impact and Outreach for Medicating Normal. In 2022, she founded APeacock Consulting, where she supports clients and their families through coaching, consulting, and support. She was tra
ditionally trained as a trauma therapist but declined licensure to work with individuals and families who are deprescribing.
