“We were so lucky. We witnessed a music style which is so rich in its culture.” — DJ Deep.

In the final part of SPIRIT Conversations 03, Cyril gets into something that sits at the heart of SPIRIT: the responsibility we have towards the culture that gave us this music.

The knowledge. The history. The people who came before us. And why, in a world increasingly driven by social media, follower counts, VIP culture and commercial pressure, that heritage shouldn’t be taken lightly.

As Cyril puts it: “This passion for the music is fragile in a way. So it’s important we are careful with that.”

It’s a conversation worth hearing at a time when house music has never been bigger, but its history and culture can easily get lost in the noise.

We also talk about his vision for Future LEGENDS, what “spirit” means to him, and close the series with the story behind his two remixes of Mike Risk’s forthcoming Future Madness.

Four parts with DJ Deep. A huge thank you to Cyril for taking the time, sharing the stories and speaking so openly with us.

SPIRIT Conversations 03: DJ Deep — Part 4 is out now.

Cities After Dark: Creative West Night-time Economy Summit — what a day!

Last Friday I had the privilege of working with the Maribyrnong Council @mayor_mohamed_semra as Executive Producer and Presenter for the Cities After Dark: Creative West Night-time Economy Summit.

The event was sold out, proof, if we needed it, that the conversation around creative investment in the West is not just timely, it is urgent.

We kicked off with ideas and inspirations from leading experts including an overview of my Churchill Fellowship, A Key Note by the fabulous @vibelab_network Lab @mirikmilan Milan followed by a brilliant conversation Art Is Infrastructure And After Dark It Is Everything Panel.

@heidi_hole Haines Artist first nations woman and local

@johnny_collins70 the QLD Night time Commissioner

Mirik Milan bringing International and granular perspective.

Anna Edwards specialist in 24-hour economies

@jessscullysydney , Local government, cultural programming and as advocate for an expanded civic imagination.

The second part was the practical case studies

Case study 1: @tim_hunt_light
The conditions for culture after dark to thrive

Case study 2: Victoria Moxey, Director Programs, Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner

How governance, policy and regulation ignite or smother art and culture

Case study 4 Karen Bryant, CEO Creative Director @midsummafestival The power of cultural programming

Case study 4: Joyce Watts, President of @main.streetaustralia Australia The importance of the high street

This was then followed by a brilliant night walk from the venue to the new Creative West site led by the fantastic Tim Hint in collaboration with me and supported by @queenslandwalks getting the base line data and insights from the community.

Let’s keep this conversation ging and continue advocating for creative infrastructure. Continue championing the night-time economy. Continue building the partnerships and momentum that will help turn ideas into action. And more locally help Maribyrnong advocate for Creative West.

Because when one city succeeds, we all benefit. When creative places thrive, everyone wins.

We’re happy to share that VibeLab has been invited to the Cities After Dark: Creative West Night-Time Economy Summit in Footscray on Friday, 28 August. 🌙

As cities everywhere grapple with questions of safety, vibrancy, economic resilience and community connection after dark, the City of Maribyrnong is bringing together some of the most innovative cultural thinkers to debate, explore and test the ideas behind its plans for an ambitious new project: Creative West.

What do you think about citizen co-created architecture? Could something like this benefit your city?

Re bringing this up as there is something in the works - Mumbai Nighttime Project

—

If we really want to be a true 24 hour city, we need to function like the ones globally that take their nighttime economies seriously.

There is an incredible rise in the hospitality - restaurant - bar industry of Mumbai, but we need more holistic solutions to create an economic driving , inclusive , diverse nightlife x nighttime economy.

First things first
- Bring in A Night Mayor
- Use our public spaces better
- Create a nighttime focused policy
- Build designated Nightlife Districts
- Create more inclusive programming
- Kickstart 24 hour public transport with Metros
- Open up more food x culture alleys through the night

While these are some ideas, there is so much that can be done .

Do you feel we can make Mumbai a global nightlife capital like the rest ?

Let’s talk about safe spaces in our scene. The phrase is everywhere, but it’s clear that words alone aren’t enough.

Real safe spaces are built with intention and action. From the top down through leadership, accountability, representation and action, not just messaging.

The future of our scene depends on every one of us taking responsibility. What do you think needs to be done differently?

🩷Festival season is here!🩷

We can’t wait to celebrate, dance, connect and create unforgettable memories together this summer. Before you head out, we’d like to share a few simple tips that can help make your festival experience even better.

Together with BLOQ, For All Who Love Foundation has created a short awareness animation with a few easy checks you can do before, during, and after a festival. Small actions can make a big difference, for yourself and for the people around you.

Whether you’re attending with friends or heading out solo, let’s look out for one another and help create spaces where everyone feels welcome, respected and free to be themselves.🩷

Safety is experienced differently by different people, bodies and communities. Taking care of each other also means being aware of our blind spots, listening to experiences different from our own and helping create an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.

Watch the animation and share it with your festival crew.

Have fun, take care of each other, and most importantly…. Enjoy every moment!

With love,

Bloq & For All Who Love Foundation🩷
