MORE WAYS TO USE THE SEATED GUARD ↓

Work with @mrbeenready during our evening No-Gi classes, Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8:30pm!

The common misconception is that playing seated/sitting guard is mainly meant for leg locks/attacks on the legs.

While leg attacks from this guard are definitely strong, we can also use our posts and frames to manipulate the lower body, for things like sweeps and wrestling up from the ground.

SWEEPS: Finding connection between your foot and your opponent’s leg can help you push/pull your opponent to disturb their base. Many dummy sweeps are common from here, as long as you’re focusing on the grip fight. Finding a collar tie, then pulling their legs/base out from under them when they try to disengage, is another good tactic.

WRESTLING UP: Just as explained in the video, you can use the seated guard to attack their lower body with just your upper body. Entries can include the one shown above, or finding ways to pull their legs and grab the single once they step closer to your seated guard. Once it’s your upper body, or entire body against just their lower, wresting can become much easier starting from the ground rather than standing.

EXTRA ARM DRAG DETAILS ⬇️

No-Gi with @mrbeenready is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7-8:30pm!

While the set ups to the arm drag can be easily learned, being able to finish the arm drag is the hard part.

Watch where the grips are for the arm drag in this video: Where are they?

One hand on the arm/wrist, with the other at the tricep/above the elbow.

To keep a solid connection to the arm, make sure you’re grabbing NOT below the elbow, but above, either at the tricep or closer to the armpit.

This keeps your opponent from just bending their arm and breaking your grips to them.

Make sure you save this video and comment below what other details you’d like to learn about wrestling/BJJ ✅

Pull your opponent diagonally to get them moving at an angle: This opens up a line of sight and a pathway to the back as you drag them down.

Lastly, make sure that you STAY CONNECTED to your opponent until the last moment that you come up to take their back.

If you let go too soon, the momentum will stop and your arm drag will fail.

Take all these tips into consideration, and get those easy back take points in your next roll/comp 🤼‍♂️

HOW TO IMPROVE AS A BJJ BEGINNER ⬇️

Adult No-Gi classes with @mrbeenready are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7-8:30pm!

Whether you’re playing ecological games or rolling like normal, ‘big wins’ for you can come from simply being able to control the other person.

Control and weight distribution are both big factors when it comes to understanding BJJ concepts, so being able to flow, adjust grips, and keep somebody controlled on the feet (and the ground!) means that you’ll be able to keep that same control during transitions to your attacks.

BJJ tournaments also require you to control and hold your positions for 3 seconds before you’re awarded your points.

Focus on the control and position, and your attacks/submissions become that much easier 🥋🤼‍♂️

Option A, B, or C? ⬇️

@mrbeenready teaches No-Gi Jiujitsu on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

One of the most amazing things about martial arts is how creative you can be.

In BJJ, there’s dozens of scenarios for each individual action you can take in the fight/match.

That’s why taking away your opponent’s options always makes the fight easier.

It’s why putting your opponent on the ropes in boxing is so powerful.

Or pushing your opponent to the cage in MMA makes takedowns easier to finish.

Once you take away your opponents options, it’s easier to follow up and make the decisions binary (1 or 2) instead of having all the available options ✅

ESCAPE THE SINGLE LEG LOCK ⬇️

No-Gi with @mrbeenready is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7-8:30!

Try our new Eco training class as well, from 3-4pm on Fridays!

In one of the ecological games we play “Hooks and Hips,” partner 1 starts with a single leg, while partner 2 has to defend and get their leg free.

An important part of single leg defense is stuffing the head and breaking your opponent’s posture, yes, but other details can be added in to defend the single leg.

There are multiple ways to get out of a single leg, but something to play with is the use of Whizzers to defend and gain a better position after you stuff the takedown.

The shin Whizzer can help you keep balance, like a knee shield in Muay Thai.

The body Whizzer can help you separate from the lock, while still staying connected enough for your own offense afterwards.

Play around with these options when wrestling and grappling on the feet 🤼‍♂️

HOW TO KEEP CAGE PRESSURE ⬇️

MMA classes @hometown_martial_arts_raleigh are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays!

Keeping someone on the fence for control and potential takedowns starts with these positioning steps on the cage fence.

KNEE POSITION: Being able to keep your knee in the fence helps pin your opponents hips to the wall, as well as keeping forward pressure against their body.

UNDER HOOK: The under hook not only gives you more control of their body, but allows you to eventually travel down to the back or legs when transitioning for a takedown. Having under hooks in grappling scenarios helps you keep “inside position.”

HEAD POSITION: Whenever your opponent bases wide to defend from the takedown, keeping your head position helps to break that posture. Pushing your opponent’s head up gives them another uncomfortable thing to think about, but also helps you collect their base/legs for takedowns.

WRIST CONTROL: Wrist control prevents your opponent from punching in their own under hook/making the exchange 50/50, and it also prevents them from throwing strikes with that hand.

Keep this position on the wall to either think about your next position, score a takedown, or strike against the cage while keeping your opponent pressured.

WRESTLING FOR NO-GI ⬇️

Train No-Gi with @mrbeenready on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7-8:30pm!

Many wrestlers learn hand fighting and stand up fundamentals when they’re very young, but these same fundamentals apply to jiujitsu as well, specifically No-Gi grappling.

Things like rolling your fingers around your opponents hand/wrist, or moving your collar tie from the neck to the skull, can change how much control you have over your opponent.

Even when playing guard, knowing how to wrestle up or manipulate your opponent with wrestling oriented tactics can change how much control time you have on the ground.

Knowing the concepts behind wrestling offense and defense can elevate your No-Gi game a lot, during transitions and moments where pure jiujitsu isn’t happening 💪

RIDE THE WRIST ⬇️

No-Gi classes with @mrbeenready are Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7-8:30PM!

Having trouble staying on top when your opponent is in turtle?

Are you jumping to find the choke/hooks, but falling off?

This technique is a great way to secure your position while you work in your hooks for the choke.

The inside wrist ride helps you keep chest to back connection, and gives you more connection to your opponent from the grip you’re holding on their arm.

Being able to control the wrist also means that they can’t tighten up their turtle and block your hooks from coming in with their elbow.

Pull their arm out of the way, secure the second hook, and slowly fall to your back, with your choking arm on the mat ✅

DOMINANT GROUND GAME ⬇️

No-Gi with @mrbeenready is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7-8:30PM 🤼‍♂️

Opt to use this grip variation when on the back body lock, and keep your opponent controlled without having to hand fight and potentially lose the chest to back connection.

With all the different versions of body locks and control when you’re on the back, this handcuff grip, (or scooter grip), gives you dominant control once you finish the takedown.

Keeping wrist control gives you that Dagestani handcuff on the ground, and opens up many more opportunities once you end up in turtle ✅

Working the Dagestani Handcuff ⬇️

MMA classes @hometown_martial_arts_raleigh are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays!

The Dagestani Handcuff is a powerful tool in MMA no matter where the fight is taking place.

If you find yourself in a position to grab the handcuff while on the wall, take it and run with it:

One of the only things your opponent can do to defend is give you their back.

Make sure you don’t just hop on your opponents back when you go for this, though, or you’ll be more likely to get slammed while trying to adjust yourself.

Instead, grab on their trap and lean backwards with the hook in: This makes going for the back much safer ✅
