Without sounding negative… I wonder whether negative numbers might be an unnecessary stumbling block if even the teachers struggle to explain it… I’m presenting at the British Congress of Mathematics Education in October so please email me your thoughts! :)

We are delighted to introduce to you our first guest for “Belief Systems – Language” the incredible Brook Tate 🌟

@brooktate is a born and bred St.Leonardsoneon who has used various art forms to slowly understand more about himself, the world, and his own ‘belief systems’. Starting out as a portrait painter, he has branched into musical theatre, drag and most recently mathematics.

Inspired by the queer mathematician Alan Turing who also grew up in St.Leonards, Brook has devised a new method of teaching mathematics - Multicolour Maths. The method uses ten colours and three simple shapes to transform the language of numbers into a creative and fluid art form, and has quickly caught the attention of the British Society of Research into Learning Mathematics and the Association of Teachers of Mathematics.

Brook will be sharing how he came to dream up the system and how a certain zebra lead him there…

Learn to paint a Multicolour Maths Mandala! I figured as I’m teaching up a mountain I may as well share my little class on here too! All you need is some paper and ten colours! You can find the introductory workbook at the National Numeracy website, and if you send us pictures of your artwork we will share them on National Numeracy Day on the 21st May! In case you missed it here's some highlights from Art of Quantum @bristoltrinity.

Huge thanks to Felix Flicker and Imogen Forbes for some fantastic talks on quantum theory and tech, panelists Felix Flicker, Meagan Hough, @jamesbraggcreative , @bgirl_danger94 and @laurene_ls_pilastre for sharing thoughts from all points if view on our panel discussion, James Bragg for the awesome quantum art installation, Brook Tate for the beautiful @multicolourmaths artwork and craft activities, our dancers @pumpkinyevna , @bgirl_danger94 and @sebatheamoeba for the performance as well as the workshop where people could have a go at their own quantum ballet breakdancing choreo, @Institute of Physics for all the cool giveaways, UWE’S science engagement masters students for the feedback and of course our fantastic attendees for being such great audiences and participants and for the glowing feedback.

We'll do our best to put on something similar soon (funding permitting 🤞🏽) Until then catch us and our junior performers over the festival season at Arnolfini's Spring Gathering and Arnolfini Late, Bristol Pride and Redfest

Feels like it’s time to get some official Multicolour Maths research underway! As the method is spreading in all different places and settings, I would love to be part of the process of recording how it really can help students and teachers. Maverick Mathematician steps into Maths corner on Countdown 🧮

We’re delighted to announce that Robinson lecturer in Applied Mathematics, Dr Tom Crawford @tomrocksmaths, is to cover @rachelrileyrr MBE on Countdown for 3 weeks from Monday 24 February.

@rachelrileyrr MBE said: “Countdown viewers are in great hands with Tom, who is a brilliant Mathematician and a lovely guy. He’s also used to people commenting on the clothes he wears (or lack of them) on his show so I am sure he will take to the role like a duck to water.”
