All summer long, my oldest kept asking me, “Mom, are you strong?” And every single time I told him yes, because moms are the strongest humans.

I mean it - and not just because I can still toss them onto the bed. We grow a whole human inside our bodies, birth them into the world, produce their food, and then we keep going. We raise these little people day after day while carrying everything else we hold quietly: the worry, the mental load, the grief or the waiting or the hard seasons that got us here in the first place. Whatever that looks like for you, you carry it, and you still show up.

I hope he always remembers that strong doesn’t only mean lifting him up. It means everything it took to get him here, and everything it takes to keep going. 💛

Six years ago, I never could have imagined what our fertility journey would look like. I certainly didn’t think it would take five retrievals and five transfers to finally get our miracle baby girl 🩷

This summer, we wanted to talk about the mental load of motherhood.

Not just acknowledge that it exists, but actually spend time unpacking it. The remembering. The planning. The anticipating. The million tiny things happening in the background of a family that so often live in a mom’s head.

We carried that conversation throughout the summer and ended it in NYC at Parkish with a room full of mothers talking about motherhood, AI, and what it could look like if technology actually gave some of that mental space back.

That morning, we partnered with AVA, a company building technology specifically to change how families carry the mental load.

And we didn’t want the conversation to end when the event did.

So this month, we’re bringing AVA directly to our Momshift community for an exclusive onboarding session with Co-Founder & CEO Laura Cunningham.

This is the clinical question I keep coming back to around the Lindsay Clancy trial. And this is bigger than just Lindsay Clancy.⁠

It applies to the postpartum woman.⁠
The woman with chronic pelvic pain.⁠
The woman going through perimenopause.⁠
The Black woman whose symptoms aren't being taken seriously.⁠
The woman whose tests keep coming back normal even though she knows something isn't right.⁠
The woman who has been to six specialists.⁠

A woman can encounter an enormous amount of healthcare and still not feel cared for.⁠

Because care is whether someone understands what is happening to her. ⁠

I spent years as a fertility nurse before I ever needed a fertility clinic myself. I thought that would help. Some of it did. Most of what I actually needed to know, I only learned by going through it.
These are the things I’d tell myself if I were starting over.

I always had a plan with dates on it. Married by this age, first baby by 30, second one not long after. I had it down to the season.But, none of it happened when I said it would.

The hardest part of infertility isn’t any single month. It’s what it does to time. Every cycle becomes a verdict. You stopped living in the present because the present just feels like a waiting room for the month that is finally going to work. I’m a nurse, so I’m very good at it; more tracking, more research, more optimizing. It doesn’t always help.
What helps is giving up the timeline. Not giving up on wanting it, but giving up on controlling when.

And finally, for me, two small boys arrived who do not care about next quarter. You can’t schedule tiny humans. They keep me exactly here, which turns out to be the only place I ever actually wanted to be - present.

I don’t think I’d trade the woman who came out the other side of that. She’s the one who came out stronger. She’s the one my boys get. She wouldn’t exist if the plan had worked out just as I planned.

If you’re in the waiting part right now, I feel for you. There’s another side, I promise. 🤍

Did you know? Most ovarian cancer doesn’t start in the ovaries. For decades, we called it “ovarian” because we assumed it began there. Now we know: more than 70% of the most aggressive subtype starts in the fringes of the fallopian tubes and spreads.

The prevention has existed since 2013. Removing the tubes (a five to ten minute procedure called opportunistic salpingectomy) reduces risk of the most aggressive subtype by up to 80%. It preserves your ovaries, your hormones, your cycle, your menopause timing. It only removes what is essentially a transit system you no longer need once you’re done having children.

And if you’re not done? IVF still works. It bypasses the tubes entirely.

So why isn’t everyone doing it?

Gina Kolata’s piece in the New York Times landed on my kitchen table last week and left me with a list of questions she didn’t have room to answer:

How much surveillance makes sense, with family history, without, with a personal history of cancer?
What are the symptoms, and is it too late by the time anyone notices?
Wasn’t that birth control pill supposed to cut my risk?
What does the procedure involve?
What if you don’t have an abdominal surgery planned?

So I called three of my doctors, read the studies, and put together what I learned.

Am I right? 🫠

Somewhere along the way millennial women got handed a list where nothing comes off. Be excellent at work. Be fully present with your kids. Text your friends back. Be a good partner. Call your parents, and increasingly, take care of them. Cook the real dinner. Move your body. Sleep.

Every one of those is reasonable on its own. Together they’re a job nobody can hold.

And the trap is that they’re all things we genuinely want. So when we can’t do all of them at once it doesn’t feel like an impossible list. It feels like a personal failing.

It isn’t. The list is the problem.

Which one are you dropping this week? I’ll go first, it’s the friends. I love them and I have not replied to a single one. I know they’ll still be there :)
