Tomorrow (October 14) Australia will vote on the future of reconciliation in this country. It’s been a rough ride but hearing the stories of love and kindness rise above the noise has shown just how important it is to listen softly and openly.

It’s no secret that I’ll be voting yes to “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”.

Polling places will be open between 8am and 6pm, local time, on voting day.

Being a business owner means you’re constantly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

And yesterday, I did something that pushed me well out of my comfort zone.

I sent an email. ✉️

If you listen to any marketing guru, one of the first things they’ll tell you is to build an email list.

So why was it so hard for me to send an email?

Well, my only experience with emails from law firms was dull and boring. Very (very) long summaries of legal cases using lots of legal jargon and little real world practicality.

I didn’t know how to start.

And it took me 4 years to send that first email 😬

So I’m taking to same approach to emails as I do for social media - just be me. Make ‘legal’ simple for small business.

If you’d like to sign up, send me a DM with your email address and I’ll add you to the list 🙂 (I promise it won’t have boring legal talk!)

As someone who lives for the purpose of connecting with and helping others, sharing a room with so many passionate people at ‘Purpose’ conference, was most certainly a highlight. It was made all the more special by the grounding force of my sassy sidekick and co-conspiring Spice Girl, Michael Bradley (also a brilliant lawyer).

Platforming lived experience voices is one thing. How and why we do it is another.

Disingenuous forces like advertising dollars, egos, tabloid sensationalism and clickbait culture are steadily eroding purpose-driven, educative discourse in today’s world.

The tendencies to commodify and reduce traumatised people have seeped into our social consciousness as a result. Each of us has a duty to treat each other with respect, safety and care. Each of us is human after all. Corporate businesses aren’t exempt from this.

Paraphrasing the old cliche of ‘treat people how you would like to be treated’, my advice on the day was, “ask survivors how they would like to have their needs met. Give them the power, they have not had that their entire lives.” Let them set the terms.

When we share our stories with agents of the media, for example, once again we must surrender control. Over several stages, outside of our view, our past, our truth, our whole identity are cut up, edited down and then repackaged. We are often asked questions that engender fresh trauma, or that aren’t conducive to producing the best reflection of a lifetime of layered pain. While there is immense gratitude in the process, there is also immense anxiety. This might not be understood or seen by the general public. Survivors often feel pressured by reporters who act as gatekeepers of our trauma. This is because we have been conditioned to fear letting others down through the mechanism of shame that underpins abuse.

These are important facts to remember.

Every detail a person offers is more than enough. It is not ours. It is, and always will be, their truth.

Thank you to everyone who made the conference possible, and to another generous, engaged crowd. The vibes were electric⚡️

We live and breathe sustainable coffee beans in our roastery! Bringing greener, sustainable coffee to the people of Newcastle (and further afield) is something Team Sprocket are keen as a bean to do each week. 🤩

Here's Roscoe busy prepping our reusable wholesale tins that will be sent out to our lovely wholesale cafes. Each 5kg drum is equipped with a one way valve, much like a coffee bag. We are very proud of the fact that we were one of the first roasters in Australia to move to bulk tins for local orders in order to minimise packaging waste.

🌱☕ Check out our large range of carbon-conscious coffee beans on our website available in different sizes and grind types to suit all types of coffee enthusiasts!

I talk with my hands 🙋🏽‍♀️🎤 perhaps it’s a product of growing up in a European household lol or simply the way in which I express myself, my speaking and the stories that I tell.

One thing that I know is that it expresses who I authentically am. I am an ambivert (extroverted when I needed to be and also need alone time) I am confident without ego, I no longer strive for perfection because I know it’s a illusion driven by fear and I’ve conquered my own #impostersyndrome so I can present and perform at my best. Make mistakes, fail, get rejected or shine and know it’s all part of the process.

I get back up when I am knocked down. I am resilient but I still hurt. I believe I can achieve whatever I set my mind to as long as I do the work. I know the power of network and surrounding myself wirh the right people. Because if I didn’t have the support of my network I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Together we can go far but surround yourself with the right people and you are unstoppable.

Sprinkle on top unshakeable self belief & confidence (both of which are mostly learned skills) and you will hold control of your own destiny.

How powerful it is to LEVEL UP - and to be surrounded by incredible women sharing their stories and skills to help and empower others.

Thank you Gen Collective for having me at your inaugural LEVEL UP CONFERENCE what a pleasure and privilege to be in this room and community.

Kudos to Chelsea from Team Sprocket balancing all of our BioCups here (maybe next time she'll attempt whilst standing on her head for dramatic effect!) 🤸🏼‍♀️

☕Sprocket BioCups are certified biodegradable, made from fully renewable materials and can also be composted. With unique hand-drawn Sprocket Roasters art, our BioCups are produced from 280GSM heavy-duty board for a premium quality product with superior stability, lid fit and insulation and printed using soy or water-based inks.

All paper is sourced responsibly from managed plantations and coated with Ingeo™, an innovative corn-based bioplastic rather than conventional petroleum-based plastic. All components of our cups are made from rapidly renewable resources and are certified carbon neutral.

🌱These eco-friendly coffee cups are available online to order.

Here at The Roost, we’re pretty chuffed with our nearly finished roosty inspired mural by the very talented @danbiancoart. Thanks for the opportunity of being the first of many small wall projects hitting Newy before Christmas @thewallstation @citynewcastle.au 🥳☀️🐓 and thanks @newcastleherald @simonedepeak for the feature 📰
